Title: Opensource DSM-520 Firmware
Post by: sirgeek on April 21, 2010, 06:55:06 AM
I'm just curious, since it as fairly apparent that D-Link doesn't wish to support the DSM-520 any more (which is their choice), what would it take to open source the firmware ?

I'm certain that there is a large number in the community (like myself) who are software developers and would enjoy going into the firmware to fix the problems we're having and add the missing features that we see/know about.

You may already have seen this, but here's a link to the source.

ftp://ftp.dlink.com/GPL/DSM-520/

I downloaded it a while ago to see if I could do something with it, but a complete lack of knowledge, time and experience defeated me.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the link, I had NOT seen that.

The only problem I see is that this doesn't appear to match (from a release date stand point) the most recently released software (this is from 2006).

In fact, If you look ftp://ftp.dlink.com/medialounge/DSM520/ you will see that this isn't even CLOSE to the most recent version.   I'm thinking that this is the 1.01  release (the original firmware).

If D-Link were to release their most recent version of the software (or, to be honest, ALL the intermediate versions too) it would go a long way towards helping the community.

I'd even purchase a 2nd 520 to use for testing on.

That's why I bought a WD Tv Live box. I was tired of waiting for a firmware update. Shop around and pick one up for around $100. Be sure to get the Live version. The 3rd party firmware for WD boxes are at b-rad.cc  This solved a lot of my complaints that I have with my D-Link 520 box.
