Which router do I need
« on: January 18, 2013, 05:56:39 PM »

Hi guys, I am not sure which router has the QOS features that I need so if someone could point me in the right direction that would be great.

I am living with a friend who hogs my internet bandwidth and rake up my bill from downloads, I need to police him. I brought the dir-615 but the QOS settings are just well... s*** house.

This guy has a mac, pc, x-box etc and I want to restrict the bandwidth to all his devices to a set amount. While giving my computer priority over traffic.

Which routers QOS will support this?

Thanks for your help.

You can prioritize traffic, you can block certain traffic, you can maybe monitor traffic, but I don't know of any retail D-link router that allows for actual throttling. You could with dd-wrt, so any Dlink router capable of that might work, but that is not for the laymen. Simplest way may just to tell him if he downloads too much you will block him all together. That way it forces the problem onto him.

Most DIR 8 and 6 series routers have QoS. Some lower end 6 series only have basic QOS, On or Off. You need DIR series router that has custom rule setup so you can manage all devices connected to the router. Having these custom rules and QoS will help you maintain good internet connection for everyone and help keep the hogs at bay.

Are you sure Furry? He isn't trying to give prioritize his own traffic, he is trying to throttle or limit the bandwidth used by his friend. It was the " rake up my bill from downloads," part that made me thing this. I assume you have some kind of ISP bandwidth capp? If so, QoS won't do anything to limit his bandwidth use. Unless Im wrong?

You are right, QoS won't do anything to limit bandwidth, however if he does input all of the devices in to custom rules, he and the router can make sure everyone gets there needed fair share. I think he needs to setup up some rules and set up some priorities to help him with the devices that seem to be hogging most of the connection.

Thanks for the reply guys,

Yes bandwidth throttling is something I really need, yes prioritizing my packets over his will help with my internet experience but when I am not home and not using it, my house mate will have full reign over the bandwidth.

I have a 200gb cap, the guy has downloaded 50gb in 5 days .__.

Ideally I would like to throttle the bandwidth of all mac address to x amount, and put assigned mac addresses  in a group which has priority and unlimited bandwidth. That way anything that connects is automatically throttled unless it's been assigned to my 'unrestricted' group.

I know this is a D-link forum, I always use Dlink hardware, but if D-link doesn't offer a solution to this problem can anybody recommend a router that can do this?

I think the DIR-865 or DIR-645 routers since they now have Weighted QoS. Check out this for an example:

Furry, I think those are good suggestions, since that type of QoS will work better for him, but I don't think any of those will really do exactly what he is looking for. Since the router would have to monitor bandwidth before it could manager it, probably start there. Does anyone know of any Dlink router with Bandwidth monitoring? I suspect the new DGL-5500 will have it, but that doesn't come out for several months.

Another option is to go DD-WRT, but only if you think your Tech swavy enough. That certainly has what your looking for, seen here. As for what Dlink routers are compatible, look here. Of those router, I think the DIR-825 is your best bet, and is about 74$ on Newegg. There is a thread on these forums here, and a thread on dd-wrt forums here and Wiki can be found here. Keep in mind, this is not supported by Dlink support. It will void your warrenty when using 3rd party firmware, but ALOT of people do it, and its safe if you know what your doing and take your time.

Now if your looking for something with it out of the Box, then PM me and we can talk? Such discussion is not prudent for these boards. Heh. :-)
