DIR-655 - unusable internet speed.
« on: January 30, 2014, 03:51:11 PM »

hello,

I've been using DIR-655 for a while and I noticed that every time a user downloads, the other users get drastically low or no internet at all. even accessing the router becomes impossible. While my internet connection is good, 50mb in theory ofc but I can get a throuput of atlesat 2-3 MBs down. but even if someone downloading at 600kb speed it jams it for everyone else. nothing is accessible including the router it self as previously mentioned. The funny thing is sometimes I download heavily and nothing goes wrong. I have tried removing the router and connecting via ethernet to broadband dial from my pc to the modem and I did also notice that the connection is much faster. I have the black dlink in another place that works like a charm with more than 10 users at the same time via another switch while downloading. halp :(

I have all QoS disabled and followed some speed boosting steps as suggested in other topics. perhaps not all of the steps as i couldnt find some.

DIR-655
Hardware Version: B1      Firmware Version: 2.09
1 wired client and 2 wireless. issue persists with any device downloading.

You may want to enable QoS and set up some priorities.

Review the XBL sticky here and look specifically at the ALL Other Devices rule:
Gaming and QoS for XBL

but this is not about gaming or ping etc. even browsing becomes not an option when a download is on sometimes.

I know...you still need to set up QoS so you can ensure everyone is getting some band width. One of your devices is hogging it all, QoS will help manage this.

Be careful of torrents too. They are notorious bandwidth hogs.

I took your advice and enabled the QoS but it didnt not help at all. Let me re-explain my issue.

my connection is now 50mbps down. back when I used to have a 30mbps download speed, My download was certainly slower but it was fine. the internet was usable and everything was ok.

When I upgraded my connection, a 1mb download speed  not even higher, will render my whole connection unusable for all the computers except for the one downloading, and the one downloading cannot even browse. only the download will keep going. I cannot access the router via 192.xxx.x.x nor access any other website. With or without QoS configured.

It just seems like the whole router cannot handle the load. I cannot view the logs during the download coz i cant access the router during. So how can I investigate further?

Did you set up some QoS rules for those PCs that need normal priority for bandwidth and set up one that needs higher bandwidth sharing?

I believe this is a configuration issue.

I just had my 655 online for a week and I'm on a 50/3 ISP package and don't see any issues with my router here...

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Hey,

I'm having the exact same problem. Could you please explain what you did to fix it? It worked fine until i was stupid enough to upgrade the firmware.
35/35mbit and can't download anything without the router acting up.

Please help?

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
