My question is, After upgrading the firmware, do you guys reset the router back to factory default? Or does the router hold on to the existing configuration?

If it holds on with the exisiting config does it still run fine?

Furry,

That's a dope avatar!!

Yes the FW resets back to factory and ur current configuration is wiped out. Thats why you save off the Configuration file before you update. After the FW is updated, restore from the Configuration file which saves the hassle of re-setting up everything.

Thats my main man on Halo, Thanks. I love him hehe.

I've got an A1 running firmware 1.15
Overall Wireless speed and connection strength is pretty weak, but the router is stable and there are very few errors (see below).  There are three wireless connections and no hardwired connections to the router, so wireless performance is key.

WIRELESS STATISTICS

Sent :4748923
TX Packets Dropped :0
Received :2649478
RX Packets Dropped :18488
Errors :84

I'm hesitant to try the 1.21b8 firmware, because there is no back-flashing, and that it pretty much voids your warranty.

You could try the v1.16 I believe. Don't use the v1.21 NA from the main web site. IF you do chose to use v1.21, use Beta 03. Wireless seems more stable. Beta 08 has random disconnects. Im using it right now. Been good so far.

I did try 1.16 months ago and quickly flashed back to 1.15.  The dropped packets and errors were in the gazillion range.

Ok, well, can you regress to an earlier version of 1.1x? Can't remember if you can go back from 1.15 or not. I can understand not willing to hop to 1.21 Beta 03. I must say it seems very good, however still dropping packets but not as much as your currently reporting. I presume the DLink is aware and working on improving WiFi.

Yeah, well if you look at my post history, you'll see the wireless signal issues have been going on since October of 2008.  I've tried pretty much everything.  Its really sad that even in the latest beta firmware there are still lots of wireless packet drops and errors.

This is why I've stuck with firmware 1.15 for so long.  Its fairly stable, very little drops/errors, but wireless signals are pretty weak.  I've heard others have RMA'd, but I can't go without a router for an indefinite amount of time, since we use it for business.

I presume that the router and other wireless devices are in close proximity? Not floors or walls of separation? It could be a HW issue. My router is in my office at the far end of my house, top floor. I get great signal both in the living room which is about 30 feet from the office and downstairs in the den which at the farthest point is 35-40 feet from the office. I presume that the antennas have been checked. What happens if you move swap antennas? Also what does the signal look like if you try using a Mode only, like B or G or N mode only? Try using 2.4 or 5Ghz only? I know that if your using mixed modes, the signal strength can go down since it has to produce all the modes at the same time. I did notice a while back that using single modes will up the signal strength.

I've tried everything.  I've found the best signal to work with wireless is 2.4ghz, fixed wireless g, NO Security, WISH and SPI disabled.  However overall speed is lower than with 5ghz and Wireless N.  Also, running a router with all these great features (which is what I paid for) is NOT an option, or an excuse.

I have stayed away from these forums for a few months, because I get so aggrivated every time I look into my issues.  I realize everyone is trying to help, but there's only so many "reposition your antennas" or "did you try x and y" that I can handle.  I worked as a network administrator for a large company (35+ offices) for over ten years.  If there is anything to be tried, I have done it...aside from flashing a beta firmware that may brick my device and is not back-flashable.

Can understand that man. And I don't know everything and don't try to toot my own horn. I can relate to your frustrations. I have been trying to help many people on here and to help DLink in there improvements for the 4500 in all the information here. I know that if you probably call DLink they might have you update to the v1.21NA on there web site. Please don't do this. This wont brick the unit however the performance is horrid and I'm surprised they still have it posted. I've been a troubleshooter for about the same period of time that you've been doing networking. Just trying offer some other solutions for you in case you don't think of them either. I've been updating my unit with the various FW updates and have not bricked the unit. Not to say that I'm perfect either however I'm fairly comfortable in the updates. Just so long as you run the FW update via wired connection. Only thing I think of is to run the v1.21 Beta 03. If you call DLink they will probably ask you to do this anyways before they send you an RMA, not sure but logic might dictate that. One guy on the other forum mentioned turning off all logging save Firewall, System and Critical. Could try turning off all but not sure if this will have any effect on WiFi though.

On Friday evening, I was using Skype over wireless, and for some reason it kept causing the entire router to reboot using 03 Beta.

I decided to move up to 08 Beta, and it's been running solid for me.  Got to use the original settings, with nothing really disabled.  Skype seems to work too!

Not sure why it was crashing it though over wireless.

I'll end up doing more thorough testing soon probably.

I think the Betas are much better then the released version of the web. Just hope DLink will put the final touches on it and the WiFi section. Like to see another Beta on here before going to public.

I haven't had a chance to report again.  It rebooted a few times more after just doing some basic streaming.  I'm using N/G Mixed, and normally never ever had a problem.  I moved it back down to G, so hopefully it'll be more stable.  Definitely needs to get fixed still.

I agree, the Wifi section needs a lot of TLC for sure. So far N mode only on Beta 3 seems fairly stable. Haven't noticed a lot of disconnects like Beta 08. These issues are mode only or mixed mode issues. Just needs fixing.  :P
