Right now I am using uShare.

I recently started using MediaTomb which I am not really in love with yet, I will find a better solution or tweak this one till it performs right.

I've been reading on Media Tomb also and it looks like the only free one that also can transcode the media before it streams it.

The problem is that it is managed from a web site and the interface tends to be smooth but it bogs down to much on load.

Well I wouldn't have anything to manage from a web interface.  All my content is in separate folders depending on what it is.  This is why I like uShare.  All I have to do is tell it what folders I want streamed and then it just works.  When I add more content to my media server I have to restart uShare but thats fine for now.

Well when you add that folder in media tomb from the GUI, which I'm sure there must be a more direct config file, I have just been to busy to mess with it, you have to sit there as it catalogs and converts everything.  My little 30 gig collection was more than I could handle, and it does not seems to have picked up the slack unattended.

In the end what it comes down to is I don't care enough about my media to make this work, ask about my FTP Apache or SSH server sometime I will tell you about how well it's running.

I use this patched version of uShare: http://netou.co.uk/?p=28

I also am running MiniDLNA (http://sourceforge.net/projects/minidlna/) plus MiniDLNA Webmin Module (https://sourceforge.net/projects/minidlnawebmin/) .
