Trying to format the HDDs - problem?
« on: September 27, 2013, 01:33:44 AM »

Hi guys,
I took out my old NAS box drives 4x3TB and placed inside dns-345 it prompted me to re-format drives and I did but I get "partitioning" popup and its been like this for 30 hours.

Reason why I am getting itchy is that some people are posting topics like "formatting stuck at 10%"
I do not get any percentage just word sating "partitioning" and little spinning circle next to it.

I installed latest beta firmware from forum links.
Reset the NAS to factory settings after that.

Do I have to format the HDDs on my PC due to them being from another NAS?

OK This is getting really annoying.
Now the little circle icon next to partitioning has stopped rotating after 50 hours.
All I have now is this: http://s21.postimg.org/l4kz2bgx3/image.jpg
Is this what people are getting when starting to format their bloody HDDs?

NAS produces no noise or vibrations, HDDs are completely silent.

This should not be this difficult, what am I doing wrong?

First of all let me apologise for triple posting in a row but seems easier to follow if other people with similar problems are reading this.

Solved it!!!

HDDs were in a raid setup in another RAID prior to them being placed in this NAS box.
I was under impression that dns-345 would re-format the drives and be on its way.
It didn't work.

I had to manually connect each drive to my PC and in device manager and delete all volumes on those drives.
After that it took 5 seconds for "partitioning" screen to disappear and "formatting" screen to appear.

Hope my problems can help some poor bugger in the future.

You applied the correct solution for this type of problem. The DNS-345 formats HDDs using the Linux filesystem, as do many other NAS makes/models. The ShareCenter series is known to sometimes get confused when encountering a new HDD with previous Linux formatting. First mounting the HDDs in Windows and removing existing partitions will remove all traces of the previous Linux formatting.
