CHAP Authentication failed message
« on: October 09, 2010, 11:06:34 AM »

Hi,

I am able to connect via cable internet using ISDN channel on my laptop. However entering the same userid/password/service name.

I have selected PPPoE connection type.
Dynamic PPPoE
MTU=1492

When I go to the status tab to the router admin page and view the logs I see these messages:

"Jan  1 00:00:21  ","CHAP authentication failed."
"Jan  1 00:00:19  ","PPPoE: Received PADS for session1. (Session ID: 159)"
"Jan  1 00:00:19  ","PPPoE: Sending PADR for session1."
"Jan  1 00:00:19  ","PPPoE: Received PADO for session1, from 00:15:17:87:24:05."
"Jan  1 00:00:19  ","PPPoE: Sending PADI for session1."
"Jan  1 00:00:13  ","VPN (L2TP) Pass-Through enabled."
"Jan  1 00:00:13  ","VPN (IPSec) Pass-Through enabled."
"Jan  1 00:00:13  ","VPN (PPTP) Pass-Through enabled."
"Jan  1 00:00:13  ","Domain blocking disabled."
"Jan  1 00:00:13  ","URL blocking disabled."
"Jan  1 00:00:13  ","MAC filter disabled."
"Jan  1 00:00:04  ","System started."

The signal strength is excellent and I am able to get an IP address allocated by the router, so I do not think this is to do with the wireless setup between my laptop and the router.

Where is it going wrong??

Hi! Were you able to resolve this as I am receiving the exact same issue with my Dlink router as well.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome!
  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.
