Playback on mydlink nvr app slow, freezing, choppy
« on: March 23, 2016, 05:50:44 PM »

Trying to view recorded video using the mydlink nvr app. When playing back video, it plays very slowly. Very choppy, laggy, freezing up, etc. It's like playing at 1fps or slower, even though the camera is set to record at 30fps. The audio is very choppy too.

It's not my phone or the app itself that is slow. It's not my phone's connection that is slow, I'm on fiber optic Wi-Fi, and I also tried 3 other Wi-Fi places, same thing.

I think it's the connection between the app and the nvr, or the NVR itself that's lagging between playback.

The internet connection that my DNR-202 is plugged into is a fiber optic (Verizon) with 300mbps speeds. It's hardwired in with Ethernet. So I don't think that connection is the problem either.

So it must be an issue with the NVR itself, or maybe the USB hard drive. Any ideas? It's a Seagate usb3 5400rpm 1tb drive. Should I try to buy a 7200rpm usb drive? I don't think that would help much.

Any settings in the NVR I can monkey with? The only thing I really see is fat32 or ntfs formatting. I just left it at the default of fat32.

What about fps or bitrate on the cameras? Does that affect only live view, only playback, or both? I have a DCS-960L and DCS-932L. I have the 960L set to 3mbps bitrate and 30fps. The 932L is set to very high quality (no bit rate setting) and 15fps.

actual live video is fine, no problems, it's very smooth. Though the quality and smoothness is better on the mydlink app instead of the nvr app when live viewing.

I have see the same issue.  It seems to be an issue with the DVR playing back and recording at the same time or the software itself.  If you want seamless playback the only way I have found to do it is to use the HDD viewer program or export the file to my computer.  You will find that it provides good quality video.

If I go to the mydlink.com website and login, click the DNR-202 in my account, and click "connect", it will attempt to open a web interface directly served by the DNR-202. It loads it as a localhost 127.0.0.1 with a random port number. This loads EXTREMELY slow. It takes like 30-60s for each page to load. After investigating this webpage, it appears that the DNR-202L is being routed through  dlink.com.tw domain to serve these web pages.  I am thinking this is probably why the web pages are slow, being loaded from a server in taiwan. These should really be going through a CDN (content delivery network) like Amazon.com, not being loaded through a taiwan server for people in America or elsewhere.

I WONDER if this is the reason the playback video on the NVR app is so laggy and choppy? Do you think the NVR app is being routed through the taiwanese server too?  I am going to do some more investigating into this and try to look at the source code of the NVR app (I make android apps for a living.)

But I will still be open to any answers on this from anyone else. :) I would rather it be a simple fix I can do, rather than have to call up d-link and complain about their servers.

I'll see if I can get some additional resource eyes to review this. Please be patient.

Update in response to my last post about the server:

The prior question if the NVR android app was being routed through the taiwan servers, is FALSE. The app connects directly to the IP address where my NVR is located! That means d-link's servers are NOT to blame (at least not for the choppiness and loading problems on the NVR Android App). The problems with the webpage remote interface still remain but that's another problem altogether.

So this eliminates that possibility.

In fact, when I try to ping the IP address of my network where the NVR is located, the pings timeout. Traceroute also times out.  So now I'm not wondering if it's my router blocking incoming connections or something that is causing the issues. When I get to my office later today, I will try lowering my router's firewall settings, and see if it helps at all. I will also completely open up port 8080 (the port the NVR app accesses the NVR on). Hopefully this might fix it?

If not, there remains only a few possible solutions:

1. The NVR android app itself sucks and needs to be re-written. Or at least have it's code cleaned up quite a bit.
2. The DNR-202L itself is having issues of some sort that need to be fixed.
3. The hard drive could be too slow to handle the loading of the video, though 5400rpm speed is pretty standard and should be fast enough.

What Mfr and model is the main host router?
Is the DNR getting a Dynamic IP address from the main host router? I recommend using a Static IP address ON the DNR set to 192.168.#.20.
Swap out LAN cables. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

The main router is an actiontec router supplied by verizon fios - I cannot change that out, it's special to verizon fios. I just tried setting the DNR to a static IP instead of dynamic, that did not fix it.

I have a cat6 cable run directly from the actiontec router into a D-link DAP-1650 ac/n/g/b dual band wireless access point The NVR-202L plugs into that via a cat6 as well. The cameras connect to the D-Link DAP-1650 via ac wireless.

I also did try turning off the firewall on my main router like I said I was going to try, and that did not fix it either.

Thanks for the help though, they were good suggestions!

Here's the funny thing. When I'm accessing the NVR from the same network with my laptop by connecting directly to the NVR's local IP address and using the GUI, I can playback the recorded videos no problem, nice and smooth and sharp with perfect audio.

So I'm leaning to think that the issue probably does lie with the MyDlink NVR app just being a horrible app, which I was hoping was not the case because I think I would be pulling hairs to get D-Link to fix the app.

There is ONE OTHER thing I found, that I'm wondering if it could be the culprit. Check out this image below:

http://imgur.com/OqFwEux

See the second column that says "sub profile 2" ? How in that "profile" the frame rate is only 5fps, 480p, and medium quality? Well for some reason I can't change that second profile on either the DNR-202L (it's grayed out) OR on the camera GUI itself (when I try to change the settings and save, it just wipes it back to the default - I'm guessing a firmware bug).

Well interestingly enough, when I'm using the NVR app to view the LIVE stream, the live stream does indeed play at only 480p and 5fps which is horrible. But when I use the My Dlink Lite app to view the live stream of the camera, it plays at the first profile setting, the 720p and 20fps. So for some reason, the NVR app wants to use the bad quality by default. I wonder if it's also applying bad quality and fps to the recorded video as well? Though, the recorded video on the NVR app plays much less than 5fps.

Well I've found that the D-ViewCam Mobile App for the DNR-322L works so much better than the mydlink™ View-NVR Mobile App for the DNR-202L. The video plays so much better, I can actually hear the audio, there's no freezing, or bugs, etc.

It's a shame that app doesn't work with the DNR-202L.

Thank you for the feed back. I'll check on this app...
