Getting 94% Format hangup Fmware 1.05
« on: June 14, 2008, 01:33:48 PM »

Hello all.

I have had my DNS-323 since January, and I am REALLY LOVING this thing... I am using it to its fullest, and really happy with it. Well, that was until about 1:30am this morning when I upgraded to Firmware 1.05 and re-formated the hard drives.

My DNS-323 is housing 2x Seagate 7200.10 ST3500630AS (yes, it is on the supported drives list) 500GB hard drives. I was previously running them in a RAID 1 array. I backed up everything on the drive, and I was going to format the disc's, and move to JBOD, one drive for 500 Gigs of storage, and the other to back up my 500 Gig drive in my PC.... Then the 2nd 500 Gig drive in my PC would back up the 500 Gig media drive in the DNS-323. RAID 1 isn't any kind of data security, so that's why I am leaving it in the dust... Sure it is fine for hard disc failure, but it doesn't protect from accidental deletion and other similar things.

SO... Last night, I upgraded the firmware to 1.05 without a hitch. Then I went to format the drives for JBOD, and the progress bar hung at 94% completion. I left it there for 30 minutes, and tried to refresh the browser as I have seen suggested here, and I was able to log into the DNS, but then was given a prompt saying that the drive needed to be formated again. I started the format, and went to sleep. When I woke up around 08:00, the format was still hung at 94%, and received the same page showing that the drives needed to be formatted. At this point, I downgraded to firmware 1.04, and the same issue persisted. My next step was to reset the DNS to factory defaults, and I am STILL getting the same issue.

Any suggestions here? Thanks all!

Figured I'd throw it in that I am very happy with my D-Link networking hardware, and have had minimal bad experiences with it over the past 2 years. Currently running WBR-2310 router, Hardware Version: A1       Firmware Version: 1.03.

Well, being bored here at work, and having the wonderful WBR-2310 to run virtual servers and what not, I was able to solve the problem remotly.... I reset the box back to factory defaults for the second time, and formatted both drives, no problem. DOH! Forgot it was still running 1.04, so I did something stupid (yeah yeah yeah... I know), and upgraded the firmware remotly, success....

Well, ok, insert foot into mouth..... Just reomtly logged into the config page, and checked status.... Kind of odd that there is still 107 Gigs in use on Volume_2 after it was formatted..... and also odd that identical drives show different total capacities...

Did you try formatting in standard or RAID0 or RAID1 as well? What happen?

I had tried a few different ways, RAID 1 and JBOD... both gave the hang, and endless format loops after reboot... The cycle didn't end until the second time I reset it to factory defaults, then when with standard (2 different volumes).... format was a success, and haven't had an issue since my last post...

My advise to anyone with this problem, reset to factory defaults, format, and if it doesn't work, reset and format again... that solved my problem.

Are both harddrives the same make and model? Can you please provide your drive information in case anyone else is experiencing this behavior.

ECF.... not trying to be rude, but did you read my posts? Lists it in both the first post, and in my signature.....

"My DNS-323 is housing 2x Seagate 7200.10 ST3500630AS (yes, it is on the supported drives list) 500GB hard drives."
So yes.... both drives are the same exact model from Seagate.

and the problem has been resolved back on 06/14/2008, as indicated also in my previous post.

I wanted to see if any other drives happen to be tried or if this issue is just using this model harddrive for other customers inquiry and verify that the issue is now permanently gone.

Had the same 94% problem after upgrading the firmware.
I am using two WD 1tb drives. They are on the tested and approved list.
I did notice, however, that even though it says it hung at 94%, I was able to close the screen and log back in to the configuration screen. Everything looked ok and the drives are working fine. Did this twice. Finally reset the device and reformatted. Still hung at 94%

Also notice that I can't change or set file attributes. If I set a file to read only, the setting is ignored.  What's up?

In a popular DNS-323 forum, it was mentioned that the 94% hangups often occurred when reformatting an existing hard disk. It was said that the DNS-323 remembers the last two hard disks it saw with some kind of magic numbers. These magic numbers are stored in flash and will not be erased even when resetting to factory defaults.

That of course doesn't explain why there is a problem with existing disks to begin with. Nevertheless, if you format a totally new hard disk, you allegedly won't get the problem. There is apparently some convoluted method (involving telnet and mounting flash partitions) to remove these magic numbers from flash, but I don't think that's entirely user-friendly.

I've personally experienced the 94% problem with 1.05 too. Luckily, in my case, it apparently had finished formatting the disk even though the web GUI hung at 94%.

Went through the process (again) of resetting the device defaults, reformatting as two separate discs (still hung) and than in Raid 1 config. This time it finished.  I might add that when it hung at 94% in the past, it also appeared that the formatting did complete each time, but was not reported back as such.

Still no luck on the attirbute issue though.

The folder attributes are determined in the DNS-323 network access settings. If changed in windows it will be ignored.

... Last night, I upgraded the firmware to 1.05 without a hitch. Then I went to format the drives for JBOD, and the progress bar hung at 94% completion.

I've read posts on other forums that indicate MS Vista IE7 and the pop-up blocker may be causing this issue. Posters have reported success when switching to another machine on which they're running an earlier version of IE.

Although I haven't experienced this problem (Vista Business) I did have trouble downloading the firmware upgrade using IE 7.0. Switching to Firefox solved the download problem. Perhaps using Firefox to format may also work.

I get the same problem with both IE7 and Mozilla. 94% hang when trying to initialise discs into RAID1 initially, then same 94% failure trying all other options to format the discs including removing 1 etc.

Basically seems like the formatting option is locked and while it tries to do something it doesn't actually change anything. Files on the disc are still there etc. even though it says it has been trying to build the array.
