How to improve Night picture / video
« on: April 24, 2014, 11:28:58 PM »

Hello everyone!

I am really happy with my new dcs-942l.
The setup and day videos are excellent.

During night I discovered that the picture is really bad.
Does anyone have an idea how to improve it?

Di you recently change any of the values in the web UI under SETUP > Image Setup > IMAGE SETTINGS?

Thanks for your answer!

No, I just set it up for the first time....
And I was thinking, that this can not be the quality during night.
The quality during day is excellent.

How large is the room in the image? Have you tested the camera on an area that's closer to the camera? Objects that are too far away from the camera will not be properly lit by the on-board IR illuminator.

This could be the problem .... I guess the center of the image is 6 meters away ....
I will try to point the camera focus to a nearer object.

I test it tonight! :)

Thanks for the help and I get back to you with new information tomorrow.

6M is not an extraordinarily large room. It may also be helpful to post a daytime image of the same location for comparison. I do agree the image looks a bit hazy, but it's hard to tell without a reference image for comparison.

Ok, the test was successfull ...

I made some changes:
1.) changed from H.264 to MJPEG Video Format
2.) changed the focus point to a nearer object
3.) I removed two obstacles, which stood left and right of the camera (to hide it a bit)

I think, it was no.3 ... why?
Cause may be the IR-lights were reflecting the IRs?

I am not sure...

Almost certainly this.

You'll probably want to change back to h.264, since it's a much more efficiently compressed video stream than MJPEG.

In this image it looks like you're getting the ir light reflecting of the glass door.

Hence the other looks better when not pointed at it.

*Unless you're a heavy smoker or have a fog machine running at night lol

After reading your last comment and looking at the image again, it's pretty clear that light is reflecting off a nearby object, which undoubtedly is washing out the image. I should have caught that earlier!  :-[
