Author Topic: Application wont work since installing DSL-2750B: Noob routing question  (Read 5472 times)

Hi, I recently installed a DSL-2750B modem/router replacing my DIR-655/DSL-526B combo.

Since doing that my Movielabel application can no longer connect to the database, which is on a server downstairs which runs FireBird DB server.

Working through the troubleshooting tips on the vendors website it says to "check my hardware router".

So, I have a real noob question. If the application client has a database specified as "192.168.1.1:e:\share\movie label databases\my database.fdb" shouldn't the traffic route from the client PC directly to the Firebird DB server on the file server, all within the LAN, without having to be routed through the DSL-2750B?

Or does ALL LAN traffic have to be routed through the router?

Firebird works on port 3050. I had no entries in the DIR-655 and it worked fine.

NO sure if the modem is routing anything or if you have a external network switch installed, everything should be routed seamlessly on the LAN side. I would get a external Gb network switch and see. Modem/Router combos behave differently than routers I believe. I might contact your local regional DLink support office and ask.

Last night I turned the unit off and tried again. Eventually I found that the problem was that the server was configured as a public network, not home/private. Once I changed that everything worked fine - with the router turned off.

Yeah, si I gues the answer to my question is that for LAN based IP-traffic a hardware router has no impact. So the vendor who says that the router could be blocking the traffic is off on some other planet somwhere  :)

Ya routers usually don't block LAN to LAN traffic. I would recommend getting a external GB network switch to use with your modem.  ;)
