Title: Unable to connect with PS4
Post by: yellowdog on April 12, 2018, 01:36:56 PM
Hi,
I purchased the router the other day on Amazon.
All seemed fine until I tried to connect to the router via my PS4. I get unable to connect maybe because the signal is too weak.
I think thats a general message and not actually relative to my situation.
I tried with smart connect and without on 2.5ghz with different bands.
The only was I can get a connection is if I switch of the security leaving the wireless network without a password.
Every other device I have in the house works fine, iMac, iPads, iPhones, Huawei P8 and Roku Streaming Stick Plus.
So I think there is an issue with the WPA/WPA2-Personal security protocol on one or both sides.
Any ideas?

Cheers

Having this exact same issue. Purchased the router yesterday and had no issues connecting my PS4 to the router right out of the box. The issue only started happening when I upgraded to the latest firmware (1.10). Like OP, I have no problems connecting my PS4 when I disable WPA, and all of my other devices have no issues connecting to the router.

Please try the FW update, do a factory reset then setup from scratch.

Try setting manual channel to 1, 6 or 11. Any unused channel on 5Ghz.
Does the PS consoles connect to 5Ghz. If PS4, I believe they support 5ghz radios..

Disable IPv6 on the router, set local only connection.

What Mfr and model# modems do you two have from your ISP??
What prior router mfr and model# were you using before the 882? Was the console working then?

Process a downgrade to 1.01B02 and see if the PS4 will connect on WPA2. I'm looking at a wireless negotiation issue between the devices because of the new KRACK WPA vulnerability implementation on version 1.10. Check to see if the PS4 is updated to the latest firmware.

i'm getting an "upgrade failed" when using the 1.01b firmware to downgrade.

When I first switched the router on there was a message straight away in the GUI to update the firmware. Which I did, but it wasn't the latest version, maybe 1.04 but it wouldn't connect either. Then the other day I noticed another firmware upgrade which I tried which brought the fw to 1.1 and still it doesn't connect.
I'll try downgrading and report back.

Least try this process to downgrade the FW:
Emergency Recovery Mode (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=44909.msg163599#msg163599)

Same goes for anyone else encountering a error message during downgrade.

i'm getting an "upgrade failed" when using the 1.01b firmware to downgrade.

Thanks FN. It's definitely has to do with the new PS4 5.53 update. I flashed my router to DD-WRT and it still didn't work. Here's how I finally got it to work:

1. Enter PS4 Safe Mode (long hold on power button)
2. Rebuilt database
3. Do not select "Test connection" in the PS4 Network Screen (this will kick out the connection each time it tries to re-establish an IP address due to the WPA handshake issue).
4. After a minute or two, select "View Connection" and you should see it connected.

The important thing to remember is DO NOT "Test Connection" after you rebuild the database. There seems to be an issue with the test connection function.

So much wasted time; my only consolation is that DD-WRT is working great on 882!

SO this process is all for the PS console?
Glad to know that it wasn't FW.
Thanks for posting. Hope it helps others.

Yes, it's all a PS4 issue; also need to set Wifi channel to either 1 or 11 (see Linksys threads).

so i havent used my ps4 since the router firmware upgrade and can confirm that i can't connect to wifi with it now.

This is completely the router firmware upgrade that caused this since the ps4 wifi and everything related to it was working before that.  lets get this fixed asap please dlink

Process a downgrade to 1.01B02 and see if the PS4 will connect on WPA2. I'm looking at a wireless negotiation issue between the devices because of the new KRACK WPA vulnerability implementation on version 1.10. Check to see if the PS4 is updated to the latest firmware.

my ps4 was not on 5.53 latest firmware.  i used the rebuild database trick posted above and then just waited for it to connect.  its now downloading and installing the latest 5.53 firmware.  so issue was not with latest ps4 firmware specifically

//edit 2... and now that i've installed the firmware update and rebooted the ps4, i'm back to no connection.

//edit 3 - spoke with dlink support. they've had multiple reports of this issue with the ps4 after the firmware update and their engineers have been notified.

would like to inform that I am having exactly same issue when using firmware 1.10, for the time being i was able to downgrade my firmware to 1.01 and wifi for ps4 is working and everything was back to normal. also i noticed that after i updated to firmware 1.10, my vlan tagging menu is missing, i am unable to change my vlan configuration.

For various reason I need more control of the router so I installed dd-wrt which I believe is supported by D-link.
After which I was still unable to connect with the PS4 using WPA Personal and Enterprise, I still get the same error which is a surprise and leads me to think its something not related to the firmware controlling the router.
But as a solution, as I have dd-wrt, I have created a controlled access list using the Mac address' so now I can run without wireless security.

Have you downgraded to v1.01 and tried again? The one poster seem to suggest this is a PS issue. Please down grade the routers FW and let us know. Please use the Emergency recovery method linked here in this thread to downgrade the router.

My 882 running the latest ddwrt firmware and PS4 on 5.53 has a stable connection so far (must set router to channel 1).

I presume if you put OEM FW back on that the console would still work as long as it was on channel 1?

I have a Apple TV 4 at the same location as the Xbox One and PS4 and it works fine, connected to the 5 GHz channel. And there is 8-10 meters (free sight) between the router and the equipment.

Have tried most of the router and console related suggestions but downgrading the firmware is the next thing to (reluctantly...) try.

Do the consoles connect to 2.4Ghz SSID using channel 1 on the router?

For obvious reasons I'm using the 5 GHz SSID with the Xbox One, the PS4 can't handle that. Channel 1 on the router? Don't know... I'm  no network expert, but shouldn't you  let the router automatically handle the channels? There are a lot of domestic gadgets using the Wi-Fi - smartphones, tablets, Chromecasts, Apple TV's, cameras etc... I don't wont to mess that up.

 :o :)

No, you can use manual channels anytime. Maybe some other wireless interferences that can cause auto not to work well. Why theres an option to set manual channels. One may also have more than one wireless AP in the home so one would want to set one up for channel 11 and the other for channel 1.

Do any of the consoles connect to the 2.4Ghz radio at all?

In addition to the PS4 issue, my sony TV now also disconnects from Wifi after about 5-10 mins of streaming netflix.  I need to turn off wifi on the tv and turn it back on to reconnect.   This didn't happen before.

I'm going to try this recovery mode to go back to 1.01.  wish me luck :(

Thanks for letting us know. I presume there maybe an issue with this latest version of FW. Will have D-Link review this as well.

Took the decision to downgrade (1.01b02) the firmware - using the Emergency Recovery Process - and now the Wi-Fi is working fine on the Xbox One and PS4 - both 5GHz and 2,4GHz.

Interesting note though - when I fired up the PS4 there was a small system update that ”improves system performance". Now I have no idea what exactly fixed the connection problem on the PS4... :o But I'm happy. Sort of.

Well you could update the router again and see if anything changed from when the PS was updated.

Thanks for letting us know that downgrading helped though.

I have a confession to make. I probably didn’t upgrade the firmware the correct way back in April and have now done it again (after briefly going back to 1.01) following the instructions, first doing the transitional 1.04 upgrade. And - lo and behold - now the Wi-Fi works with both the Xbox One and PS4.

However, I find it a bit troublesome that D-Link offers a way of upgrading the firmware through the router's web GUI, but urge the user not to use that method in posts hidden deep inside the forum...

 :) Peace.

We suggest that because downloading the firmware file and upgrading it locally is better than remotely upgrading. There is less chance of corruption. It is like upgrading wirelessly vs wired. Wired = less chance of packet loss and data corruption. Honestly with today's routers and better quality/speed internet connections there is very little chance for getting a corrupt firmware or failed upgrade doing it through the GUI, so no need for concern.

I've had ZERO problems with using the GUI for updating FW.
I've always used this method to update my routers FW and this process have never failed me:
Link> >FW Update Process (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42457.0)
I prefer to manually download FW files.
Also seen bad browser behavior in Chrome when doing FW updates. Also PC and browser security can impact how FW is processed and sent. So I tend to use good proven browsers and disable any pc security software and add-ons temporarily while doing FW updates.

Did you downgrade the stock D-Link FW to see if that helped with you PS4 console? Others mentioned it fixed it for them.

Also this user seem to be able to get his router working on recent FW with his PS4:
