Moving files from USB HDD to NAS
« on: May 11, 2011, 07:26:31 AM »

Hi there,

I'm really new to 'NASing'. I bought the device to back up all of my data, which is saved on 3 different external hard drives. I was wondering if there is any way I can just plug my USB HDD into the back of my NAS, and then transfer all the data directly, as it's taking forever doing it any other way.

Thanks in advance.

By the way, I am on firmware 1.10 if that has any relevance.

There is, but it requires running third party scripts. Google "dns-323 ffp". You can telnet into the DNS323 and mount the USB drive then copy the files.

Out of the box, the USB port only supports printers.

The DLink forum is not the polite place to discuss FFP :)

As for mounting and formating, try this link
http://www.horto.ca/?p=27

Once mounted, it is simply a matter of running the copy command 'cp' with appropriate parameters. Type 'cp --help' or google 'linux cp' for more information.
Usage: cp [OPTION]... [-T] SOURCE DEST
  or:  cp [OPTION]... SOURCE... DIRECTORY
or:  cp [OPTION]... -t DIRECTORY SOURCE...
Copy SOURCE to DEST, or multiple SOURCE(s) to DIRECTORY.

example
cp -pR /mnt/HD_a2/[path] /mnt/usb

Thanks for your response. Sorry, I didn't realise I was being impolite, like I said I'm really new to all this stuff. Is there another forum that you know of that may be better suited for me on this topic? Thanks
