Title: Problems with 2.4GHz band
Post by: mantorok on May 29, 2015, 06:43:06 PM
For some time now I've been having problems with devices connected to the 2.4Ghz band.  They either disconnect or the speed becomes very low ( < 1Mbps).  Its really noticable when a device on the 5GHz band is streaming video (eg. YouTube), the 2.4GHz band becomes almost unusable. I can usually get speedtest.net download speeds around 100Mbps on the 5Ghz band.

I recentlty upgraded the 868L to firmware to 1.10FB (from 1.7) but the problem was there on the previous version too.  I followed the recommended firmware upgrade process.  The firmware was sourced from the Australian D-Link support site. BTW, the hardware version is A1.

I normally have the 802.11 Mode set to "11n & 11g" but I've tried "11n only" and "11g only" but they still have the above problem.

As a temporary workaround I've now disabled the 2.4GHz Band on the 868L and set up an old Netgear router (WNDR3800) as an access point.  So far it hasn't had any problems and I get much better speeds (15  - 70Mbps depending on distance from Netgear AP).

Is anybody able to suggest anything to fix this.

If your not in the NA region, I recommend using the following version of FW:
DIR-868L Rev A Patch v1.10 B04 WW Region

I'm located in Australia and I used the 1.10 firmware from the Australian D-Link website:  https://au.mydlink.com/download# (https://au.mydlink.com/download#)

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Hi FurryNutz

I set the channel to 13 and disabled HT 20/40 Co-existence.  The other settings you mentioned were not there or already set as you posted.  Security is set to WPA2/AES only.  I'm still getting issues with 2.4GHz connected devices.  eg. Streaming video will stutter and pause using the 868L but will play flawlessly when using the Netgear.

I have 6 devices that are connected on the 2.4GHz band: a Laptop, Wii-U, 2 x 3DS, Logitech Harmony Hub and an AirPlay portable speaker.  Most are usually in standby mode unless being used.

There are a few other routers nearby but I can't see how they would cause the problem for the 868L while the Netgear works fine. Likewise the 868L and Netgear are both at the same location in the house.

Some other things I've observed since using the Netgear instead of the 868L for the 2.4GHz band:

Anything else you can suggest to fix this?

The 868L is still under waranty so I'm seriously thinking of returning it and getting another one.

I would recommend trying another DIR-868L. I have not seen this with my unit.
