Same problem.  Tried to upgrade my HW ver.:B1 from 2.00 to 2.10 last night.  After waiting "150" seconds, no admin page; goes straight to "Firmware Update System".  Tried to upload 2.10, 2.03, then 2.00 using IE, then Firefox.  I have tried all combinations.  I have tried the detailed Router Recovery from Corrupt Firmware as prescribed by Mr. Nutz in topic=44909.0 to no avail.  Emailed D-Link support.  They are sad for my misfortune and wish me luck, which is nice...  It's so frustrating to see the thing all powered up, LAN light blinkin'.  But there's nobody home.  After trying to apply a FW .bin file, the router cgi page says (in cheaply coded html):

 Firmware Upgrade

Incorrect hardware ID image, Please check !

    NOTICE !!
Please select the correct image !

Very frustrating.  And such a waste to brick a perfectly functioning router with an "upgrade".

Is the UI still accessible?
We presume that you are unpacking the .bin files from the zip files?

If you can access the routers web page, do a factory reset, then try to install 2.01, factory reset once again, then go to v2.03, then try v2.10 from there?

Use only IE or FF and disable all 3rd party security SW and be LAN wired to the router. Can be disconnected from the ISP modem as well. Just download the files before you disconnect.

  • What region are you located?

Thanks so much for your interest and quick response.

The only UI that is accessible is the "Firmware Upgrade System".  The title the webpage (in the Firefox tab) is "Backup Loader".  The router's normal webpage - admin login et al - is not accessible through any means that I've found.

I'm in region NA (Kansas - maybe that's the problem).

I am connected from my PC to the router with a LAN cable into one of the switch ports.  There is nothing in the "Internet" WAN port on the router.  I configured my network adapter to a local address (192.168.0.5) and closely followed the recovery sequence you laid out in the post I referred to (topic=44909.0) in my first posting.

I did post about this problem in another thread but I either failed to get it saved or it was removed.  Regardless, it's important that I mention that I did try the initial FW update through the Tools/System page on the router and using the Chrome browser which I now know should have been avoided.  I did not even consider consulting a forum for an operation that looked so routine and straightforward.  I have several devices that I've flashed the bios and/or updated the firmware on without incident.  So this one took me completely by surprise.

I used IE 10 to download 2.10NA, 2.03NA, and 2.00NA.  I used Windows Explorer to extract the .bin files.  IE would not upload the .bin files to the router; it would just hang.  FireFox did upload the .bin files to the router but in a few seconds the router would report "Incorrect Hardware ID Image"...

I would happily provide any screenshots or router information that anyone would find helpful.  Thanks again for your interest.

Ok, seems like this router needs to be RMAd. I would recommend that you phone contact D-Link support and ask for this to be RMAd. I think you've done all you can to get FW loaded and something has happened to the flash on the router. You have the right FW files for this region. The only thing you could try is that if you used Chrome to download the FW files, use IE or FF to re-download the files and then extract them again and re-try.

Ya, We've seen some odd issues with Chrome thus, I highly don't recommend anyone using it for doing any FW updates on any device, period. IE and FF are known and tested browsers for this in Windows. If FF is reporting a Error message then I presume the router is bricked and needs to be RMAd.

I recommend that you phone this in and hopefully D-Link will fix it. Not sure of the warranty status, however worth a phone call. Just tell them that you've done all the steps in the recovery and it's failing and just needs to be re-flashed by D-Link.

Keep us posted on how it goes.

The router was purchased in January of 2011, so it's well outside its warranty period, but I will give D-Link a chance to help me out.  Like you say, it's worth a call at least.  Had to purchase another router in the meantime (the show must go on), so getting the DIR-655 working is not as urgent as it was yesterday.  But I'm not letting it go yet.

Thanks for the advice.  I will report back after my interaction with D-Link; one way or the other.

Cheers.

Similar problem.  DIR-655B, FW v. 2.00NA.  Was installing a new NAS, couldn't get the UPnP to work.  I read that it was likely due to a firmware issue--saw v.210 on the router's UI, installed it.  That ended up killing the wifi (the signal was on/off on about a 3-second cycle).  Some more reading led me to the download page, where I saw v. 2.11NA was the most current.  I downloaded *that*, and installing it completely bricked the router.  I can get to the "recovery mode" page (labeled "Firmware Upgrade System," v. 1.0.0.2, 2009/12/07, on my system).  I've run through the process many, many times, trying both the 2.10 & 2.11 .bin files--I typically get nothing, but about 1 time in 10 it will give me the "wrong hardware ID" error.

Is it worth trying to downgrade to a previous version?  (Was working fine on v. 2.00, less the UPnP with the NAS.)  Where can I find the older f/w files?  Thanks for any help!

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

How did you upgrade the router? Via the routers web page using it's upgrade function or did you download and send the file? IE or FF is only recommended for doing FW updates with add-ons disabled in the browsers.
Try sending v2.00 in recovery mode using FF or IE. It's on the main site. Emergency Recovery Mode

I that works, and you want to upgrade to v2.11, Please follow this for doing any FW updates:
FW Update Process

Do not use Chrome for this process.

Hi, FN--and, thanks for the quick reply & help!

I'm in North America (Kansas City area).  The initial "upgrade" (2.00 >> 2.10) I did via the router's web page (resulting in bad wifi but wired conx just fine); the second "upgrade" (2.10 >> 2.11) I did via the web page (having done some more reading & found v. 2.11).  Using IE, all add-ons disabled.

Can you point me to v. 2.00?  I can only find the most current one (2.11)....

Cheers!

No-go on the v. 2.00, either....  Same "Incorrect hardware ID image, Please Check !" error....   :-[

Any other ideas??  I see from these forums that I'm hardly the first one running into this--what gives w/ these firmware updates??
