DIR-885L Recovery Mode Problem
« on: July 25, 2017, 09:04:58 AM »

So I've been having an issue with a DIR-885L. The chain of events goes like this:

Power On The Router

Power LED Lights Up White And Turns Off

Power LED Lights Up Amber And Turns White After 15 Seconds

Power LED Turns Off

Cycle Restarts

Now when I go into recovery mode which works perfectly, I select a new firmware from the official support page and it begins to upload. As soon as it does the power LED stops flashing amber (turns off), lights up amber, changes to white after 15 seconds, turns off again and repeats several times before eventually becoming solid white and staying that way. While this is happening, the emergency firmware install completes successfully (which I'm inclined to believe it didn't) and then the router remains unresponsive. When I reboot it, the original cycle begins to happen again. Does anyone have any idea how to get this router functioning again? I do not have any warranty left so my only option at this point is to try to fix this thing. I should mention that I had a DIR-890L that exhibited the same symptoms but I was somehow able to get it fixed eventually, I just don't remember how I did it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

Are you following this correct?
Emergency Recovery Mode

I would try to downloaded the shipping FW first to see if it loads correctly. Use IE11 or FF, not chrome. Disable all PC security software temporarily as well. Be sure your LAN wired to the router.

Has the router been doing this from the start or just started doing this?
I presume the router is new and the power supply would not be a cause.

I am located in the USA. The router just started doing this recently. I have followed recovery mode to a tee and have gone all the way through emergency firmware installation. The problem could be caused by a faulty power supply, I wouldn't know. Do faulty power supplies create this result commonly?

They can. If you got this at a local store, I would do this, get another and test the new power supply with your current router and see if the problem goes away. If so, you can talk to the store and ask for an exchange.

If the recovery process in failing then the router needs to be returned or RMAd.

Unfortunately, this is not a new router and I would not be able to exchange it. My warranty period is also expired. Would it be best to try to get a new power supply for it?

Yes. If you can find a same voltage and amps PS to try you can use it. Only the volts and amps matter. If you can't find out, I recommend contacting D-Link support and asking for an RMA. It should be under warranty with them.  ;)
