DD-wrt support

The DD-wrt web site says it now supports the 895L.  Has anyone taken the plunge?

Hi,

Yes, I have been using the latest versions of DD-WRT since some months back. Currently, 05-23-2018-r36006. As far as I can determine, everything is working.

However, setting up DD-WRT to work optimally is complicated. I have not found any concrete suggestions in setting up DD-WRT for the 895L and am surprised that there is very little traffic in the forums from 895L owners.

The reason I opted for DD-WRT in the first place is that I again am surprised and a tad... disappointed about the release schedule and functionality of the official D-Link firmware. I bought the flagship D-Link router with the naive belief that D-Link would focus on and keep this product in the forefront. Don't know what you guys think, but I certainly am not impressed.

DD-WRT is cool and you can do a lot of things with you your router that stock firmware does not - however, honestly most is overkill for me. I much rather that D-Link treated the 895L as the flagship/premium product its price warrants and use D-Links stock firmware knowing that they would make sure to keep the 895L's firmware state of the art...

Best regards,
Christer

Do any of these articles help with loading DD-WRT? I know I got my 890L working on WRT fine.
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?board=610.0

Most of the 895L support is offered over on there site and is recommended to review there information:
https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=1&sid=80f31ff47b3aeebd6aa55bfe7628c980

Do a search on there forum for 895L. You'll see some threads regarding it. I've helped a few users out over there.

Hi FurryNutz,

Thanks for your reply!

The installation of DD-WRT on the 895L is simple and and it seems to work well! However, as mentioned earlier my issue is the setting up of DD-WRT to optimize/fully utilize the power of the 895L.  There is no guidance on how to "optimally" setup DD-WRT for the 895L.

One concrete question. I want to have one SSID for my network and that devices connect (or are delegated) the best or appropriate radio interface (as I understand Smart Connect works on the D-Link stock firmware). In DD-WRT I can give all the radio interfaces the same SSID (and password). The problem is that I don't know or control what radio interface that my devices end up connecting to.

I would like to setup one radio interface to be optimized for devices that are far from the router (maximum power/range) and one for devices that are close (maximum bandwidth). Also to be able to make sure that certain devices connect to a specific radio interface.

Have searched the DD-WRT forum extensively and other places as well. Any tips are much appreciated!

Best regards,
Christer

Ya, that's one thing about WRT FW that they don't see to have good information for. Since there FW covers an overall general use, I guess they leave it up to each one or a group to figure out what works best for WRT on routers.

I would post this there and see if you get any response:
https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=1&sid=80f31ff47b3aeebd6aa55bfe7628c980

Also look up and search on 890L. There is some good info there as well. There are some base similarities between the 890L and 895L so you can gleam any good info on the 890L and can apply it to the 895L.

You might see if there is anything in there that could be helpful:
https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Index:FAQ

These are basically two different OEM and WRT FW beasts. And WRT is there beast.  ;)

Good Luck.

Hey Christer-- are you still out there?  Still using DD-WRT?  Considering making the plunge again (liquor increases your courage) and wanted to know how it's going.  You're the only guy I've found on the WWW that seems to have made it work.
