Hello again everyone.

What a weird finding. Today I took my DIR-882 to a friend who has same ISP and same optical converter but he has 500Mbit connection. I have tried speedtest over 5G wifi at his place and got 480Mbit - did not change absolutely nothing at settings just connected the lan cable from optical converter to WAN port.

So I decided to lend his router DIR-878 and connected it at my place where I have same ISP same OC but has 1000Mbit connection and BAM same s***ty speed 240Mbit max over 5G wifi.

Oh gosh I have no idea what is going on, I have tried with my router really everything, change of cables, settings, firmware tried also change position of the router in the house to be sure that in that room there is no interference, but nothing

So my router at friends place is behaving as it should also his router is behaving the same ( both routers 470-480 Mbit over 5G )
But at my place both routers 240mbit max when ISP is providing 1000Mbit

My question is: is it somehow possible when ISP is feeding the router with high speed internet then it behaves faulty?
Or are there any settings in the router I should check which can cause such slow speed over 5G network? I am pretty sure now that it has nothing to do with 5G wifi settings as it works fine at his place.

P.S.: someone here at the forum mentioned to try higher channel 149-165 but I do not have that option in channel settings, but the DIR-878 of my friend has that option which is also weird right?

Thank you all for help and reading

Can you borrow your friend's router (D-link DIR 878) but try channel 149 at your place this time? It's weird that your router has channels 149-165 hidden, they're not even DFS channels, just the channels with more power.

Some EU regions don't support DFS channels. Possible don't support the higher 149 upwards channels as well.

Here's my speed results with a ASUS GT-AX11000 wireless bridge mode connected to the DIR-882 v1.30 FW. SC and DFS enabled. DNS Relay disabled. Low power set due to other wifi signals near by.

wow I"d love to get these wireless speeds out of my DIR 882.  I seem to top out around 300.   I have smart connect and dns relay disabled.  what is DFS and where do i find it?

/edit i'm in canada and i've performed a factory reset

What FW version are you using?
I believe I had smart connect enabled when I did this test for mine.

DFS channels are a additional set of channels that, if present in FW, can be used on 5ghz. However, some router mfrs don't include this to allow users to manually change channels here. May not be supported on some wifi chip sets so some router modes may be limited by this. If you don't see this in the channel selection under 5Ghz if smart connect is disabled in the channel listing, 56 thru 121, then it's not available in your region.

Also some 5Ghz AC class devices max out at around 400-500Mpbs so this is another factor to consider. My iphone 6sP maxes out at around 400Mpbs...

i'm on 1.30.  i'll try enabling smart connect - for some reason i just dont trust it but we'll see how it goes!

Yeah I dont see anything labelled DFS though I can pick channels

Well that's the issue ; DFS channels are only available if you select the AUTO channel since they interfere with radar close to airports and if the router detects a radar signal it must vacate the frequency ; that is possible only with auto as with manual selection the channel would be "set in stone" .
2nd thing : the images posted with 1700 Mb/s link/PHY rate are only achieved with clients witch have support for 160 MHz wide channels . These are very limited and include a few AX compatible routers and Intel AC9260 / AX200  wifi cards . Even most wifi6 compatible phones do not support the 160 MHz channels (I think some Huawei flagships do )
What client do you have connected to the router that it tops out @ ~300 Mb/s  (what PHY/Link rate does it connect to te router as if it's a 1x1 class client with 433Mb/s link rate that throughput is normal ) as the quality of client is also of high importance ; with intel AC7260 equipped laptops and Samsung S9/S20 ( all 2x2 MIMO compatible clients 867 Mb/s PHY rate ) i'm getting upwards of 420 Mb/s in internet speedtests ( routed traffic ) and with just LAN traffic between my NAS and my notebook I'm seeing 500+ Mb/s throughput ( 60+ MB/s ) all tests of course done in the same room as 5GHz is more susceptible to attenuation than 2,4 GHz .

What channels do you see when smart connect is disabled on 5Ghz?
36, 40, 44, 48, 149, 153, 157, 161, 165

this stuff goes over my head quick but i think i found answers to the other post too

i have a lenovo t560 laptop with intel dual band wireless-ac 8260.  windows 10 says i'm connnected to 5ghz on channel 157. link speed is 866/866

speed test i just ran with speedtest.net win10 app - it peaked at just over 300Mbps before slowing down and finishing at 242Mbps.

Its more or less like this for my Google Pixel 2 XL and Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e.       I tested an iPhone SE (the new one) and that one can do over 500Mbps so i'm not sure whats going on

1st . Never use Smart Connect ; it doesn't do band steering of clients well and the performance penalty is too great
2nd. The available channels for manual selection is correct ; between channel 49 and 149 is the range of DFS channels which the router can only choose by itself to use in auto mode ( and free those channels if there is a Radar using that particular channel ) .
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels#5_GHz_or_5.9_GHz_(802.11a/h/j/n/ac/ax)

You can only intruct the router that it may choose to use the DFS channels after selecting the Auto option as here https://imgur.com/E1CB6zk
.

The clients themselves seem to/should be capable of 400 Mb/s throughput ; for the laptop you might try using Intel's ProSet wifi driers as opposed to those from Lenovo ( Lenovo T series owner here also and I've always had better performance with them) .
I assume that via a wired connection you're getting better results ; I'm just asking to eliminate the ISP as a reason for the results .

Here is a speedtest (contract is 500/250 Mb/s Down/Up and wired speed are true to contract)

and here is just switched throughput ( NAS > Laptop)

Thanks for your reply!

I have gigabit internet and wired I see roughly 930 Mbps down consistently so I'm happy with that.

I'll try the other drivers on my laptop thanks for that suggestion.

As for smart connect, it's really that bad? I find it convenient but I don't want to have wireless speeds suffer because of it.    I can't seem to find definitive information on the internet other than anecdotal evidence from some users.  Some claim it's good, some claim bad.

Regarding the penalty from Smart Connect I remember there was a performance hit but I just don't remember how much it was ; I stopped using it mostly because the band steering algorithms weren't very good so my 5GHz capable device would be on the 2,4 GHz band even though they had good 5GHz coverage . You could try disabling it for testing purposes and see if that does anything .

One more thing about the performance of the Intel Wifi ; with my AC7260 card I'm getting a considerable performance hit due to the "Microsoft WiFi Direct Virtual Adapter" which are created for use in wifi direct cases and also for Miracast/Wifi Display purposes I think ; since I don't use any of those functions disabling the virtual interfaces to gain throughput was a no-brainer for my use case .

I believe my speeds results I took earlier were with smart connect enabled.
