Review of DNS-343 with FW 1.01
« on: September 28, 2008, 09:55:30 AM »

Evaluation Posting #1:

Item: DNS-343
Firmware: 1.01

Feedbacks:
1. Hardware
a. Front Panel Design

- The front panel is kind of too loose, thus it's very easy to slide up and open out. The design of the way the front panel opens would pose as a risk for family with young children at home, as the child may accidentally just hold the front panel to lift it up.

- Improvement Suggestion - The front panel can be designed to slide down and open out. Thus, to open the front panel, the NAS would need to be tilt upwards at the front, slide the front panel down and lift it outwards. This design would be more children-friendly, thus giving the parent(s) ease of mind having it place anywhere in the home without worrying about their children accidentally mess around with it causing data loss.

2. Web GUI
a. Advanced menu

- RAID, the creation of new RAID volume does not allow customizations such as volume labeling.

- Improvement Suggestion - Reference to Intel Matrix Storage Manager/Console (with ICH9R chipset) version 8.5 on some of the basic RAID creation functions that should be included in the DNS-343 RAID creation. Examples: Volume Labeling, Write-Back Cache Enablement/Disablement.

(Without HDD installed)
- UPnP AV Server, the buttons - 'Save Settings', 'Don't Save Settings', 'Refresh' are grey out.
- iTunes Server, the buttons - 'Save Settings', 'Don't Save Settings', 'Refresh' are grey out.
(With HDD installed)
- UPnP AV Server, the buttons - 'Save Settings', 'Don't Save Settings', 'Refresh' are no longer grey out.
- UPnP AV Server, the buttons - 'Save Settings', 'Don't Save Settings', 'Refresh' are no longer grey out.

- Improvement Suggestion - If the UPnP AV Server & iTunes Server services are running in the background even without HDD installed, then the Web GUI should allow the user to disable it even without HDD installed, for security reasons such as reduce surface of attack.

b. Status menu
- Device Info, the System Temperature sometimes does not tally with the LCD panel. Difference: Web GUI displayed values are 6 degree F and 3 degree C lower than LCD panel displayed values.
