I have a DIR-655 Rev B, 2.11NA setup as an AP on my network, since I was having issues with the router dropping connection for all devices connected to it. Now it works flawlessly for the wired connection but having issues with the wireless dropping connection or going really slow while connected. Since I setup the router as an AP most of the services are off and dchp isn't handled by the DIR-655 anymore but by the modem.

What wireless modes are you using?
Mixed G and N

What security mode are you using?
Auto WPA/WPA2 and AES

What wireless devices do you have connected?
2 notebook pcs, 3 android based phone, PS3, printer and 1 wired pc.

Any cordless house phones?
No, 3 cellphones however.

Any other WiFi routers in the area?
Yes, used a app for my phone to determine best channel.

What ISP Service do you have?
DSL, PPPOE

What ISP Modem do you have?
Stand-Alone

What ISP Modem brand and model do you have?
Netgear DM111PSP, wired connection works flawless connected to just this but no wireless on it.

Try setting WPA2 only and AES only.

Is there wireless running on the ISP Modem? Be sure to set the channel to something different if the ISP modems WiFi is enabled while using the 655 as an AP. Set the ISP modem to 1 and the 655 AP to 11.

• Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
• Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many? Use v3, its free.

Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Got it set to WPA2 only and AES only and also looked at Inssider, decided to change the d-link to channel 11 and see how it goes. Currently there is either 2 or 3 overlapping networks on the 2.4GHz band for just about any channel. However was about 13 co-networks on my previous channel and only like 6 now. Also the DSL modem has no wireless on it, just one wired connection hooked into the d-link.

Have to wait and see how everything goes, since the d-link works fine for awhile after a reboot.

Sounds like you might be WiFi Congested area: Managing Signal Congestion

Drops less with changing the security to just WPA2 and AES only from what I'm hearing, looking at the signal congestion now. See if I can get to go a bit faster but less dropping is good for me at least.

USA and the Managing Signal Congestion link actually made the connections drop out even more. So just going back to high in advanced wireless.

Any of your devices support 5Ghz by chance?

I didn't think the DIR-655 supported 5GHz band. Not sure if I have any devices that do 5GHz either.

I see now...you have some neighbors near you using up channels 1, 6 and 11.

I see that there's an open connection that has a blank SSID. Can you connect to one of those by chance and see how the connection does. Just as a quick test. Turn OFF the 655 during this test.

Reason for asking if any of your devices supports 5Ghz is that you really should migrate to 5Ghz. Yes the 655 doesn't support 5Ghz however you could add on a 5Ghz supporting DAP as a Wired AP and configure it for 5Ghz. I believe your area is just congested and is the main cause of the WiFi going down intermittently. Your notebook PCs could be upgraded to 5Ghz. Not sure about the phones. Most printers are only 2.4Ghz if they have wireless. There are options to convert printers to USB or LAN connections. You'll need to refer to Phone Mfr for information on if any one of the phones supports 5Ghz. Some Androids do. I believe if you installed a 5Ghz AP on the 655 and migrated what you can to 5Ghz, you'll see a big different. I see there's nobody using 5Ghz in that list...
