diagnosing slow PC to PC file copy speeds ?
« on: January 21, 2017, 08:13:16 PM »

Hello.  I've just bought and installed a DIR-855L in place of my DIR-655 and so far I am happy with it.

So, 2 things to ask -

1. the 855's user interface is, shall we say, "very limited" and doesn't show very much.
How can I find out what the connection speed is from PCs wired to the DIR-855 router ?

2. I have 2 PCs wired (and other thimgs) to the DIR-855 router. The NICs are configured to connect at 1000Mbps full duplex.
When using the old DIR-655 and copying files from one PC to the other PC, using file shares, Windows showed files transferring circa 100MB/s ...
When using the new DIR-855 and copying files from one PC to the other PC, using file shares, Windows showed files transferring circa 10MB/s ... 1/10th the speed.

Because it is very large video files being copied around (many gigabytes), transferring at less than gigabit speeds is totally inadequate.

The main reason I bought the DIR-855L is because it's advertised at as gigabit router - but it is acting like it is a 100Mb/s router).  Same PCs before and after.

Suggestions on how to diagnose/fix are heartily sought.

I changed the connection to test it out -

Previously, both the PCs were wired directly to the router - result = 100Mbs file copy speeds.

So, I replaced those PC connections to instead be wired into a Dlink 1Gb switch, with the switch then connected to the router - result = 1Gb file copy speeds returned. All cabling had worked previously on the DIR-655..

update: see  post  below, the DIR-885L is OK - the actual issue was intermittently faulty cat6 cabling.
Hence IT IS DEFINITELY (update: not) THE DIR-885L which is limiting wired PC to wired PC file copy transfer speeds to circa 100Mbps instead of the advertised 1Gb ... on the same cat6 cabling and with nothing else using the router at the time.

I can live with the additional cost of intervening switched to perform the job that the DIR-885L router was advertised to do (and doesn't actually do) - but I paid $300 for that router based on it being advertised a gigabit router.

Not happy.  Not at all.

Suggestions welcomed.

Sorry, I have no real clue and I don't have either model to test.  FurryNutz might be able to expand/comment later.

But  - can you remove the switch and test again?  And maybe swap cables?  And which switch are you using?

I didn't check tie DIR855L manual as it is late - but does it have any identification on the connection speeds? (yellow/green lan lights?)

I saw the DIR855L for like $30 at newegg, and the dir655 was like $55 there.

Where are you located?

Did you reboot machines after swapping routers?

Hello and thanks for your response !

OK, I went mad and re-cabled with all fresh new cat6 cables direct from PCs to DIR-880L router and removed the gigabit switch from the path.
Result = close enough to 1Gb file copy speeds returned.

Re-tried cables again and looked at NIC connect speeds each time with the DOS command
Code: [Select]
wmic NIC where NetEnabled=true get Name, Speed on each PC and sure enough one of the cables was dodgy.

Conclusion: one of cat6 cables was dodgy, worked then didn't and then did again, etc.

Learning: never ever trust cabling when it comes to diagnosing issues, even if it has worked before.  I wish the DIR-885L interface had shown more information such as connect speeds, then it would have been obvious immediately.

Now I'm happy as Larry with the DIR-885L (apart from the user interface not having an Expert mode).

edit: I'm in Australia, we get ripped off with technology pricing over here.

I used to do LAN cable testing with routers with two PCs connected directly to the router. Disable all PC security software and exit all back ground running programs. I used 800Mb, and 4Gb sample files to copy and write back and forth between each PC and take measurements.
