DIR-665 Rebooting on VOIP applications
« on: August 03, 2014, 08:05:46 PM »

Had my 665 (A1/1.00NA) for a few years now. No issues until late. Recently out of the blue, when I use my MagicJack for phone calls and Mumble/Ventrilo for gaming, the router will constantly reboot as soon as I pick up the phone and dial, or a call comes in, or almost the very split second I connect to mumble and/or vent (There are 8 PCs in the house, all of them either have vent or mumble installed, both on a couple and it happens with any of them). It will reboot over and over but once I shut down mumble/vent and unplug the MJ rebooting stops and its flawless once again. I've reset it to factory, reflashed the firmware, have the necessary ports forwarded now (never used to be an issue but thot I'd try it) and moved the MJ to another port, all with no change. Seems like it only has to do with VOIP stuffs. The MJ is hardwired as are 3 of the 8 PCs, rest are wireless, yet still happens on any of them. Any info will be greatly appreciated!

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable or Disable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) and test under Setup/Internet/Manual. Disable may help with speed performance on higher speed ISP services.
  • Turn OFF DNS Relay  under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. The DST setting is only needed in the NA region. Tools/Time.

Test this out by disabling PF rules and reserve the IP address for the VoIP device and then put this IP address into the routers DMZ. We find that doing this helps with VoIP device operations. I use the DMZ for my ATT Microcell here.

ISP is cable, Time Warner Columbus.
Modem is a Zoom 5341J (purchased from a local retailer)
Service is dynamic IP, altho my ISP IP has not changed in some time.
Best speeds I've seen are 54.4 down / 5.80 up (http://www.speedtest.net/result/3666600927.png)
All cabling is cat6
MTU is 1500
All other settings you mentioned below seem normal. I flipped on and off some of them, namely the advanced DNS, turned off QoS and WISH. Still reboots. I have the MJ unplugged now and haven't used vent or mumble and the router uptime is now at 20 hrs. before it wouldn't go 5 minutes. Soon as I plug in the MJ or start vent/mumble it starts rebooting again  ???

I've reserved the MJ IP and set it to DMZ, still reboots. I've forwarded ports for mumble/vent on each other machine, no change. I still have my old 655 that is (or was) going to my nephew and hooked it up, no problems at all, nothing reboots. I may just keep the 655 and foot him the 665 as he don't use anything VOIP related if we cant figger this out or if its not deemed that my 665 is on its way to router heaven  :'(

Ok, I've tried just about everything I can think of, including, but not limited to:
Re-flashing the 1.00NA firmware, resetting to factory and not changing any settings prior to testing (except turning off wifi to prevent any rogue connections).
tested with NO pc's at all plugged in, only the magic jack, tested it in ports 1,4. Wireless radios turned off -- rebooted soon as a call was attempted.
tested with only my main pc, plugged magic jack into usb port, pc and internet fine till I tried to make a call, rebooted.
tried my kids MJ, rebooted.
unplugged all pcs but my wifes, she uses mumble/Ventrilo. all was well until she connected to mumble. rebooted.
same as above using vent. was able to connect but as soon as she pushed to talk, rebooted. the other end later wrote that they heard the 1st 2 words and she was gone.
tested all pcs and devices plugged in, wifi on except for magic jack or any VOIP, everything else full force. ran for 3 days str8 with out a hiccup. After 3 days of a rock solid connection, plugged in MJ. I actually for got I plugged it in and someone called. Answered the phone and heard some static, then 'error, check internet connection.", came down to look and it was in midst of a reboot. I'm outta ideas.
I think I'll just pass this one on to my nephew and use my old 655. My nephew don't use any kind of VOIP and everything else seems to work besides that, however, if you happen to have any suggestions, I'm open.

Sounds like there is a problem with this Mumble device/service.

Can you put this device in to the DMZ?

Maybe an incompatibility issue with this device and this router. And since there won't be any new FW updates, I guess handing off to a different application would be best if you can't get it to work well.

I did forget to mention that, I did try DMZ with both the MJ and 2 of the mumble/vent pc's. same issue. I even had the wife try the WoW in game vchat, that even reboots the router, I wasn't expecting that, but I can netflix, watch youtube and download massive files all day with out a hitch. There is definitely something this router don't like about voice apps and its all of the sudden here recently. I've had MJ for years and the wife and I have used vent/mumble for quite some time and its never caused any problems. I'm at my wits end so I've got my old 655 online now, no problems at all. I'll prolly just keep it this way for the time being as I've plans to deliver the 665 to my nephew next weekend. He will get better use from it than I since he don't chat. Thanks a ton for your help!
