Title: Extra iPad and iPhone appearing in DHCP clients
Post by: rgraves on May 07, 2021, 11:11:41 AM
I have one iPad and two iPhones in the house.

When I go to Network Settings and scroll down to 'Number of Dynamic DHCP Clients', I'm seeing two iPads and three iPhones in the list.  I found the ones that match the IP and MAC addresses on my devices.  There's still an extra iPad and iPhone appearing in the list.  They have the same generic device names as mine, but different MAC addresses.

They don't appear to be actively on the network right now.

We haven't had guests over in months.  Other than someone gaining access to my network, is there another possible cause for having devices appear twice with different MAC addresses?  Is there anyway for me to tell if they are my devices or not?

Change the SSID name and PW to something different temporarily. First see if the devices remain on the router page or not. Then connect your iphone and pads to this new SSID name and PW. See if anything appears or not.

I'll try that soon when we don't need the network for a bit.

If I go under Status -> Device Info on my router, the two suspected devices are not listed under LAN Computers, Internet Sessions, or Wireless, so it doesn't look like they are active.  Looks like they were on the network at some point recently.

I heard iOS and iPads have randomized MAC addresses now.  Could that be the cause?

Really? Where did you hear this? That would not be a good thing.

Sorry - not randomized, but a different MAC for each wi-fi network.

OK. Possible. Not sure about that. You'll need to check that out and see. Keep tabs on the status pages to see what's connected and take notes on MAC addresses and any changes.
