about to buy a new router...
« on: August 16, 2010, 10:20:07 PM »

I used to have the DGL-4300 but one day it just stopped working. I thought I liked that router, lets get the newest d-link gaming router ( DGL-4500 ).

since I've owned this router I've had problems. I'll be browsing the web and sometimes the pages just stop loading. I try to restart the router from the browser sometimes with luck I'm able to, other times I'm not.

I had to restart my router today because of this. I read about how the older firmware was better but I bought mine with 1.21NA.

The constant need to reboot this thing is rather annoying, but at least it works most of the time.

My blackberry has had problems with this router without an end ( Wi-Fi ). I've tried it on other wireless networks and it works perfectly ( Linksys ). Advice? ( Yes, I'm using G )

This router is by no means cheap, and for it not to do basic tasks it's simply ridiculous. D-Link you failed, now man up and update the firmware and fix it.

What firmware do you have loaded right now? 1.21N/A? If you are on 1.21 N/A that might be the issue. Since if you read 1.22N/A Revision Info: it says

¤ Fixed: Correct HNAP issue.
¤ Fixed: DNS relay issue ( WAN Slowdown )
¤ Added: Advanced DNS descriptions

I believe your issues was due to Wan slowdown. So yea 1.22N.A has this problem fixed go ahead and try it. As for link let me know if you want it. Remember upgrading does not mean it will solve your problems first lets troubleshoot it. But in this case I think it is safe to go ahead and upgrade.

Ya v1.21NA has issues. I use my iPhone on this router. Works great. You'll probably want to do a mixed mode for the blackberry depending on how high it's wifi will go.

I am so sorry for being late, I was busy with someone. Not that way. KK here is link. I will link you to latest firmware since it is proven to be stable so far. I personally would go for latest. I have provided both firmwares. These are for american DGL-4500 No European routers allowed to flash with this.

1.23N/A
ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dgl4500/firmware/dgl4500_FW_123NA.zip

1.22N/A
ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dgl4500/firmware/dgl4500_firmware_122NA.zip

Please JRas, let us know if your issues have improved please! How to update? It is simple. once you download simply extract the files. Now login to your router (192.168.0.1) Default login. Navigate to TOOLS > FIRMWARE > FIRMWARE UPGRADE. Remember! after you update, to set the wifi security Etc. Again my apologize for being late.

By the way I was just revewing your case about the Blackberry not connecting. My theory is that the reason your black berry can't connect to the Dgl 4500 is because you need to set the security mode to WEP. Oh well I guess I need to screen shot :( Blah!!! Anyways how to do this? Navigate to BASICS > WIRELESS > WIRELESS SECURITY MODE. Change it to WEP. I have also provided you with a screen shot. Please note I am not 100% sure this will make your black berry connect but I suggest you give it a shot.

I heard to set it to B/G only since my phone does not support N but I'll try it again.

Which one should I update too, 1.23N/A or 1.22N/A?

I'll set it up for WEP again, I believed I tried it before but I heard WPA2 was more secure. I've used the push-button setup on the side of the router a few times, and the PIN method. It works for a little but not consistent.

I would set the router or the highest mode any of your WiFi devices that will support it..so if you don't have any devices that use N, then set the router up for those modes that you actually need. Some people use G mode only at 2.4Ghz.

As for FW, since you are having issues with v1.21, just update to the latest v1.23. It will have all the fixed that same in v1.22. DO a factory reset 1st, then update, then do another factory reset then go configure your settings. Save off your configuration so you don't have to manually redue it again.

JRas Those settings seem to be set fine. So is your black berry connecting? I would also like to let you know that yes you are correct WPA2 is more secure than WEP, But I do believe that the black berry can not connect to WPA2. So go with WEB. If it still does not connect just go back to WPA2. I would like you to give me a feed back on how the new firmware is doing?

It seems stable but before it seemed stable too. Time will tell

My blackberry Wi-Fi icon is showing up on and off, I'm not sure what that's about. I'm not sure how good my signal is but I'm most likely going to get a switch to move my router upstairs. I remember reading this router has some type support for cellphones that saves battery life. I'm wondering if it's turning that on and off

KK just keep me or us updated.

It has been stable so far but I'm not sure if my Wi-Fi is fixed for my phone. It does work most of the time but like now my icon is not lit up.

I should buy a switch though so I can move my router upstairs to improve my signal.

Stable sounds good, Hopefully we can resolve your phone problem. Go ahead and do what furrynutz suggested.
