Antennas for DIR-855?
« on: September 30, 2011, 10:07:45 AM »

I replaced a dlink DGL-4300 wireless with ANT24-0700 antenna, with a DIR-855. The signal strength was not as good up stairs.

I tried the ANT24-0700 antenna on each plug and signal went from 57% to 55% on all 3 tries.

I got a ANT24-0230 antenna and signal strength went to from 57% to 40%.

Has anyone found a better antenna for this router?

You would need 3 external antenna as all 3 antennas are used at the same time I believe.
There was a guy in the DGL-4500 forum that put 3 hawking's on his and said it works great.

What is the distances between the router and devices? It's preferred to have the router on the same level as the devices and if need be, might get another AP to the other levels of the house for better coverage. You could use the 4300 as an AP. What wireless modes and bands are you using?

so if i get 2 more ANT24-0700 antennas it should improve signal strength?

router located in basement, ps3 & laptop located 2floors up. this router works great and the internet is actually faster even though signal strength is less then with old router. no need for AP just looking to maximize my router.

It's possible that it might help however if the router is in the basement and your trying to connect with devices 2 floors up, your still probably not going to see a great improvement. There are many materials in the floors that can inhibit travel along with items in the rooms sitting between you and the router on each floor as well.

May I ask what wireless modes and bands you are using?

i don't know what modes or bands i am using....not sure how to find that out....but when i replaced the stock antenna with the ANT24-0700 on the DGL-4300 there was an improvement i don't remeber exactly how much. and i was getting 80%-85% signal strength upstairs.

thanks for all of your help

You can find your wireless info under Setup/wireless/Manual on the routers web page. Let us know what your using there.

A and B modes aren't used much anymore. Mainly for older earlier wifi devices. I would use single mode N on 5Ghz if you have any devices that support 5Ghz and N only. If you don't, turn it off. As for 2.4Ghz, I use Single mode G or mixed G and N when i have devices that support N.

single g mode increased signal strength to 62%-65%, but unfortunatly i discovered that i have wireless devices that use b and n so i need to leave it on 2.4 mixed b,g,n. On that setting i just hooked up 3 ant24-0700 antennas and the signal stregth went down to 40%???? im confused and still searching for a better antenna

It's possible that the materials between the floors might warrent an external AP. I think your trying to extend your signal of what you have thru too many floors in the house and you need something better than antennas to get singal up from the basement to the top floor. Any chance you can move the router up one floor? One thing you could try is if you have a window on the basement and one on the top floor and there in the same line on the house, you could try to put the antennas out side the window in line of sight of each other.

I would investigate the 1 watt AP that Patrick533 seems to enjoy:
