throttling bandwidth for specific devices possible?
« on: May 16, 2011, 04:07:44 PM »

Hello, thanks in advance for any help.  New to routers and trying to understand all Dlink features.

Bought a DIR-601 for my sister and her kids for their home.  Setup and works successfully.  Sis asked if there is a way to give her laptop bandwith priority over the kids devices.  As is, they are all sharing limited DSL bandwidth.  Reading the manual, I see the QOS feature for specific types of traffic, and other limiters and schedules to shut out certain MAC addresses entirely.  But wondering if this throttling feature exists in the router also.

Thanks again.

Look at the 601 emulator page I can see QoS options however I don't see any entires to enter in addresses and priorities? Does her router have additional places to put in IP addresses, port numbers and priorities? If so then this would be a good place to put in all devices connected to the router and make her priority Higher than the others when everyone is online. You can review the DGL-4500 forum for the gaming and gamefuel sticky on what some prioritizing looks like. The look of the page is a bit different however the data contained works great on all routers.

If her router doesn't have the ability to prioritize the devices and traffic under QoS, it might be better to get her a router that has this feature. Most of these routers don't have any band width throttling abilities, just prioritizing.

Let us know if we can help out.

I think on this router, QOS just affects the types of traffic, not an individual device/user, which is my goal but not 100% sure.

{{"Most of these routers don't have any band width throttling abilities, just prioritizing"}} -- Are these two abilities the same thing?  Am i using the wrong terminology for what i'm looking for?

Yes, QoS is just that  Quality of Service, Bandwidth Throttling is different.

QoS can work for you if the router has the ability to prioritize the traffic. It will help maintain the bandwidth so that all devices that are setup in it will get near equal bandwidth if set up well.

My goal is to have bandwidth favored towards a specific user/device, over any others who are connected.  Do I understand right that the QOS feature on this particular router can't accomplish this?

Yes. QoS can do this.

How so?  Manual says QOS prioritizes applications.

Does this router have a QoS option and in the menu screen, are there places to enter in IP addresses and port information? Setup/QoS

Yes the DIR-601 has QOS capability, but limiting certain types of internet traffic is not my goal.

then all you would need to do and setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for the devices that will go into the QoS.
Then set up the QoS rule for each device. Setting a priority level highest for the device that you want to have the most bandwidth and lesser priority for the ones that shouldn't when they are on-line at the same time.

Looking through the manual, and the emulator, I don't see a way to prioritize via QOS rules...Am I not looking carefully enough?

Ya I'm not sure if prioritizing is an option under QoS for this router, seems that you can only enable it and thats it.

I would recommend maybe getting a different model DLink router that has this feature. Specially if your wanting to manage the traffic while devices are online at the same time. I would recommend the DIR-628 or 655 minimum as they have the extra QoS features I think your needing. Check out the Emulators for these routers and go into Advanced/QoS Engine and you see the difference.
