Heres a step by step guide to set up Apples Airplay features using Apple supported Airplay devices connected to D-Link routers.
Items needed
- D-Link DGL/DIR series router.
- Apple Mac PC or Laptop or Windows PC or Laptop
- Apple iPhone 4 or newer
- iTunes for iPhone, Mac or PC
- Apple TV or Apple Airport Extreme or Express or Any Apple device that supports the Airplay feature.
- Apples Airport Utilities, v5.6 for older generations of Apple devices or v6 for newer generations of devices.

Apple Airport Express, iTunes and Mac Book Pro used for this example
Router Configuration
1. On the D-Link router, set the following settings for WiFI and Advanced WiFi and Advanced Networking:
Mixed G and N modes, WPA2 and Auto Cypher (TPIK and AES), Channel Width - Auto 20/40Mhz, Manual channel 11 or Auto Scan under Setup/Wireless/Manual. HT20/40 Co-existence enabled for routers that have this feature and WMM Enabled under Advanced Wireless. Enable IPv4 Multi-Cast Streams under Advanced Networking. The wireless mode and Cypher depend on generation of Apple device used. Older generations do not support N mode or AES only cypher. Check Apples support site for generation and feature support information. Newer generation models may support Single mode N and AES only configurations.
NOTE: Tested this configuration with a 1st generation Airport Express (Wireless G only and TPIK).
Airport Device Configuration Using Apples Airport Utilities
1. Set a static IP address for the Airport Express under local networking section.
Use the following values:
- IP address: 192.168.0.50 thru .59. If your host routers IP address is 192.168.1.# then change the 3rd octet to match, i.e. 192.168.1.50 thru .59. (Other 2ndary wireless devices maybe using .50 IP address. Use the next available address.)
- SubNet Mask: 255.255.255.0 or it should match what the main host router is using.
- Gateway: 192.168.0.1 or should be the IP address of the main host router if the default value is different.
- DNS: 192.168.0.1 or should be the IP address of the main host router if the default value is different.
2. Apply the settings to the Airport Express. You may need to reconnect to the newly configured IP address after the changes take effect to continue the configuration of the Apple device.
3. Bridge the Airport Express to the DLink routers 2.4Ghz WiFi SSID using the "Join Wireless Network" feature on the Airport Express. Enter in the SSID name and PW used to connect other devices to the D-Link routers WiFi radio. Apply the setting to the Airport Express.
4. Remove the LAN cable between the Airport Express and the managing PC or Mac.
5. Verify that the Apple device is connected correctly to the D-Link router by viewing the LED indicator on the front of the device. Apples Airport express uses Green for connection or a blinking Amber color to indicate there is a problem. Verify that the Apple device is correctly connected to the D-Link router wirelessly by viewing one of the following sections on the D-Link router: Status/Wireless or Status/Device Info/Connected Devices.
The device should be listed with the static IP address that was set on the Apple device.
Test the Configuration
1. Connect a audio head phone set to the Airport Express's 1/4" audio jack and start iTunes a Mac, PC or iPhone that is wired or wirelessly connected to the D-Link router.
2. Open iTunes. Look for the square box icon with a solid arrow pointing up in side the square box left side of LCD window next to volume slider control. Select this icon and the name of the Airport device that you set up should be listed here. Select the Airport Express device. This will tell iTunes to output the streaming data to the Airport device instead of the local PC audio source.
3. Select a song from the audio play list in iTunes and play it. Put on the head set thats connected to the audio jack on the Airport device and audio sounds should be heard on the head set. Adjust the volume in iTunes by moving the volume slider control to adjust volume level. If the sounds are heard then the Airplay is configured correctly, connected and ready for streaming.
Final installation placement of Apple device
From here you can plug in the Apple Airport device near audio electronics and connect it to a audio receiver or media player or speakers. You'll need a 1/4" stereo audio patch cable to connect the Airport device to a stereo audio receiver. Refer to the audios receivers Mfr support site or manuals on supported connection information and cables to use.
For Apple TV devices, you can connect it to a TV monitor for streaming video.
No port forwarding configurations on the D-Link router were used for this and is not needed.
