2.4 Ghz WIFI DISCONNECTIONS (Unsolved problem)
« on: December 19, 2020, 11:02:50 AM »

DIR-890L Router HW: A1 FW: 1.20
My Region: Spain (EU)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I've been doing configuration tests for a couple of weeks, and I can't fix the problem: The 2.4G Wi-Fi connection disconnects several times a day.

The computers in my wifi network are:
4 Amazon Echo devices (Alexa), several smart plugs, 1 Samsung Tab S3 tablet and 1 sansung S8+ mobile phone .
The device specifications are IEEE 802.11b/g/n.
Wifi devices have their firmware updated. Amazon Echo devices update automatically.

I have followed the instructions in the post:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=75617.msg306948#msg306948

More specifically, my checks have been the following (Configuration >> Wireless >> Advanced Parameters):
- Smart Conexion Disabled.
- I have changed the SSID names of the 2.4 / 5Ghz WiFi radios. All the names are different. I have tried with the 5Ghz radios on and off.
- I have tried all possible modes: 802.11b/g/n, 802.11g/n and 802.11n.
- I have tried with the Wi-Fi channels in automatic, and also in manual: Channel 1, and Channel 13. I have no interferences with other routers (I have used the Android "Wifi Analyzer" app).
- I have tried Transmission Power: High, Medium and Low.
- I have tried automatic 40/20 Mhz channel width and also only 20 Mhz, with HT20/40 coexistence both activated and deactivated.
- I have tested both the Visible and Invisible SSID
- I have tried both without programming and with a daily programming profile (off from 00:00h to 06:00h)
- WPS-PBC Status: I have tested on and off.
- Security mode is WPA/WPA2-Personal

In Configuration >> Internet device mode in Router Mode.
In Configuration >> Network >> Advanced Parameters, I have also tested the speed of the WAN port both 1000 Mbps and 100 Mbps.

The power supply is working properly. There is no type of interference in the power supply. I have even installed an uninterruptible power supply.

I have tried all the possible combinations of the different configuration modes mentioned, and in all cases the 2.4G Wi-Fi connection is lost: connection disconnects several times a day.

I have also performed several Factory Resets, but it always loses the 2.4G connection.

I have noticed that when I lose the connection, the 2.4G light on the router stays on, and the Wi-Fi network appears on my tablet, but even if I press connect from the tablet, it does not connect, the network appears but does not connect. It is as if it lost the connection but it was blocked.

Sometimes it connects after 1 hour, it connects itself, but loses connection again.
Logically, when I modify any parameter, or when I restart the router, the 2.4G connection is restarted but disconnects at least 2 or 3 times a day.

Finally I have tried with a Lynksys WRT54GL router, with the Wi-Fi network configured in 802.11b/g (option that the DIR-890L does not have), and all the devices work perfectly, there are no disconnections, and it has been working stable for 1 week, therefore it is not a device compatibility failure.

Please, I need help to solve the problem. Update firmware or whatever is necessary.

I will gladly give you the information you need, in order to solve the problem.

Best regards.

Try updating FW to this version and see?
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=73912.0

Factory reset and setup from scratch after applying the FW udpate.
I would disable the 5Ghz radio and see if the 2.4Ghz radio still experiences problems. if so you may need to disable the wifi radios on the 890L and connect up a wired wireless AP system.

Dear moderator,
I have installed firmware versions v1.21 and v1.22, and the 2.4g wifi continues to suffer disconnections.

I have been trying the different combinations mentioned in the posts, following instructions, and observing for a couple of weeks, and the same thing always happens: the 2.4g wifi is disconnected, at least once a day. It only reconnects when I turn the router off and on again or when I make configuration changes (and the wifi restarts).

All devices are disconnected, but the Wi-Fi network appears on the tablet and on the phone. Although I try to connect manually, it does not connect to the network. Try but don't connect. I have also tried to put the fixed ip (device and gateway), without DHCP, but it does not connect either.

After so many tests and intense headaches, I don't think it is a problem of the aforementioned configurations, but I think it must be a problem of the encryption of the communication. Something happens inside the router that causes the consistency of data transmission to be lost, and in fact, that then I can not connect. Nor can I find how to configure the type of encryption (TKIP/AES).

The fact of disconnecting the Wi-Fi radios and connecting up to a wired wireless AP system, I do not think it is a serious solution, much less professional. The cost of an access point could be even higher than a wifi router, which would do the functions that I need (2.4g WIFI). This would be like buying an all terrain vehicle (4x4), which cannot travel on the road because the engine stops, and then I would need to hire a towing service to tow the all terrain vehicle to the field or mountain.

Note that the specifications of the DIR-890L indicate that it has 2.4g Wi-Fi, so it should not require an additional Wi-Fi access point. In fact, I paid a good sum of money to have a high-end router so that it would not give me problems.

It is for this reason, that I am taking so much trouble, and the least I hope is that you take note of this incident and pass it on to your technical service, so that they can update the signature and solve the problem. Not only for me, but for the prestige of the d-link brand, and of the users.

I hope your understanding, and I remain at your disposal to resolve as many doubts as necessary.
Thanks a lot. Best regards.
JM.

One option would be to downgrade FW to v1.11 or lower. Another would be to migrate to DD-WRT FW and see. If you continue to see any 2.4Ghz problem after these two suggestion, the there would be a hardware problem.

Good Luck.

I already had the same problems with firmwares 1.08 and 1.11, so it wouldn't work. (that's why I decided to update to v1.20)

How can I migrate to DD-WRT FW? Where do I get the latest firmware? Can you tell me where the instructions are in the forum to do the migration?
thanks.

Dear Moderator,
from where should I load the file "factory-to-ddwrt.bin"?

From the Firmware Update page, as you start in the section "Migrate to DD-WRT Firmware from D-Link Firmware- ALL DIR models" of the first post (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic= 72749.0)

or from Emergency Recovery Mode, as indicated in this post for the DIR-882: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=73607.msg295455#msg295455

However you indicate in the first post: "[DO NOT USE THE RECOVERY MODE TO APPLY 3rd party FW !!!]".  :o
Is it possible to make the exception with "factory-to-ddwrt.bin" and be able to load it from Emergency Recovery Mode without breaking the router?

Thank you.
