The worse experience - DIR-890L
« on: June 12, 2017, 04:28:44 AM »

Hello,

Firstly, I want to say I've been a DLINK fan for a long time however my opinion has changed after the purchase of my DLINK wireless router.  Looking for a new router I decided to do a lot of research in finding the best router out there.  I wanted a router that had the best range, some advanced features etc and after some searching I landed on the DIR-890L.  I also want to state that this is NO cheap router.  This was expensive unit so I was expecting top performance.

Unfortunately the router has been performing like crap from day one.  The signal is not good it drops connections constantly and I'm totally surprised by the lack of support for the what seems to be crazy issues with the firmware.  Just by example of how many people are complaining about the flaky firmware you think DLINK would just fix the dam thing.  One great story I have is when I started to see issues I called DLINK support and the tech actually told me to downgrade because there were problems with the firmware.  What kind of crap is that?  They posted the download as the latest firmware but yet you shouldn't download it????  THIS IS NUTS.

My request: Can DLINK kindly release a version of the firmware that isn't crap?????????

Last DLINK product I ever buy...and I was thinking of going DLINK for my smart home...forget that!

Jeff.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.

Im currently using v1.10 with SC enabled and no issues.

  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
Are wired connections ok? Wired speeds ok?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have? Link> Speed Testing Sites

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Ensure that different SSID names are used between each WiFi 2.4/5Ghz radios. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighbouring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N or AC on 5Ghz?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions. Try channel 48 or 149 on 5Ghz.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Ensure any devices with WiFi adapter drivers are updated.
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use a WiFi Scanner to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • For routers with Smart Connect Technology , try disabling this feature and test. Under Wireless.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

"Can DLINK kindly release a version of the firmware that isn't ****?????????"

Most of what Dlink uses is open source so if you don't like it you are welcome to contribute to its improvement.  ;) If you want better now, use your own firmware. Just keep in mind this forum does not support 3rd party firmware, but the forum I linked to does.

We don't "need" to do anything.  ;D Their request was straightforward; different firmware, so that's what I suggested. I am all out of magic buttons, so if the OP want's help with a specific issue, that is up to them to communicate, not up to us to drag out. Help those that help themselves.  8)

I wouldn't be surprised if Dlink gave up the consumer market all together. I bet if you looked at their sales SMB is taking up the majority of their business. Just look at this forum and how few post there are on routers compared to cameras and NAS systems. It's like 200:1 when before it was the exact opposite. I think TP-Link and other manufacturers are dominating the value niche in the consumer market and Dlink doesn't want to compete at the high end level so they cut their funding. I am not bashing Dlink, I am sure they have their reasons, just calling it how I see it. #Feelsbadman

We here at D-Link definitely have not given up on our consumer products. Most of our day to day customer interactions are happening on Amazon and they usually don't have the time/interest to join the forums and express a positive experience. In fact, what we're seeing as a trend is a consolidation of customer interaction in vendor sites review systems that's so satisfactory, most don't make it past there, unless those review systems fail to solve the issue as with cameras, etc.

"We here at D-Link definitely have not given up on our consumer products."

Then what do you contribute to the drastic reduction in posts on this forums about routers? Why can't I buy a Dlink router at a store anymore? Walmart, Bestbuy, Staples, etc, none of them sell Dlink anymore except online.

"In fact, what we're seeing as a trend is a consolidation of customer interaction in vendor sites review systems that's so satisfactory, most don't make it past there, unless those review systems fail to solve the issue as with cameras, etc."

Could you repeat in simple language? Are you insinuating that your routers are so good now, they don't need support? That sounds like PR spin if so. Aren't customers allowed to speculate here? Or are we only allowed to say things that make Dlink look good? If so, I will kindly take my leave. I don't do propaganda. You have your moderators for that.

Routers tend to be a once every few years purchase per home, where cameras are several per home and upgrades are made pretty frequently.

True, we have focused more on cameras in the brick and mortar. That was a decision that was made based on the success of cameras in the retail space.

"In fact, what we're seeing as a trend is a consolidation of customer interaction in vendor sites review systems that's so satisfactory, most don't make it past there, unless those review systems fail to solve the issue as with cameras, etc."

I have no idea what that means. I don't speak lawyer. Could you repeat in simple language?
Routers are pretty basic products. For the most part customers needs are met via direct interaction on the retail channels review system, unlike something like a camera that can have a lot of nuance, camera customers and the like, usually end up requiring deeper support or the product has deeper flaws and they flow to here.

You seem to be drawing conclusions based on correlation. Correlation is not causation.

It was recommended to phone contact your regional D-Link support office, not email.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.

Is above a joke?
Anyway, long time ago I emailed to D-Link Croatia but I haven't received any response. Situation is still unchanged. In the end, honestly I expected a little bit more professionalism from D-Link.

So he left the forum. Send an email on his departure. A 2nd time.  Doesn't seem like a good point of view then up and leave the forum if you can't stick it out.

This thread is not close since the OP has not responded to feedback and questions presented to try and help him figure is router out. We can re-open it again if he chooses to re-visit this.
