Camera's microphone is disabled when I connect external speakers
« on: December 29, 2015, 09:01:50 AM »

My integrated camera's microphone is disabled when I connect external speakers. I need to plug an external microphone too to make the microphone working. However, in my settings I need to use the integrated camera's microphone while external speakers are connected.
Any idea to how can I solve this problem?
thx

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your DCS? Look at the sticker behind or under the camera.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the DCSs web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

What Mfr and model is the main host router?

I would check the user manual for configuration information about the microphone and speakers.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

Was the camera working before the update?

When I connected the camera the first time, the wizard asked me to update the firemware. I did it then when I would like to connect an external speaker (using the cable found in the package) speakers work fine. In the mean while if I want to talk so that my father on the cellphone hear me, it does not work. When I use to connect an external microphone too it works but in my case I don't want to use external microphone. I want to use the DLNIK microphone because it is more efficient. Then, I want to keep my speakers connected. Is it clear for you ?
Thanks

I had the same issue with mine. Its not a problem per se...but a design flaw IMHO.

The cable that comes with the camera is a mini stereo speaker/mic breakout cable.   It is plugged into the jack on the camera and it provides two new jacks..right?  One pink and the other green I think.   The green is for the speakers....its a stereo UNAMPLIFIED signal.  You need amplified speakers to here what comes out of that jack.  The red/pink jack is for the mic input.

When you plug the cable into the the camera's jack, it effectively reroutes the internal speaker/mic connections to that cable. So you would have to connect an external microphone to that red/pink jack in order to hear what is goinbg on in the room if you have speakers hooked up to that cable.

I wasnt even aware that the camera has its OWN built in speaker.

My issue is that I get feedback loops when using my cell phone to try and talk to the room if I have their mic on as well.

I would make contact with D-Link support about this and ask them if there is a problem or something in configuration.

Are you referring to the feedback issue or the OPs question?

Calling tech support is laborious....but I just did.   15:36 minutes of conversation and hold time just about the mic question ......my question didnt fit the CSR's scripts.  He kept repeating my question and getting it wrong -- I finally stated one last time:

"I understand that the camera has a built in mic and a built in speaker. However, I want to use the breakout cable that was provided with the camera for the speakers/mic and use my own speakers but use the INTERNAL camera mic, but that does not seem to work".

This all took 15:36 minutes from the time I called. He put me on hold and got back to me a few minutes later and confirmed that yes, using the breakout cable shuts off the internal mic and speaker.

Then I asked about the feedback....I connected to my camera via android and demonstrated the sound for him when he asked me to describe the sound.

He then started asking about firmware, which I had already said was NOT updated yet due to my waiting for the extra power supply.

He kept repeating what I was saying and rewording it...clearly trying to fit it into a script.

I guess its a callcenter overseas somewhere......

After about 10 minutes of THAT, we agreed that I needed to wait for the power supply and then call back to perform a manual firmware upgrade that he can walk me through over the phone.  He says that before we can go any further the upgrade must be done.

Ok..so there we are.  LOL.  So 30 minutes on the phone and all I confirmed was the internal mic/speaker being disabled with the breakout cable plugged in.  ::)

I have to say that he was nice and pleasant.  But the combination of a language barrier and having to use scripts really slows the process down.  But at least I was able to get through quickly.

I am still on the fence about this camera.   I hope I can work out these kinks because if it works as advertised once all is said and done it is worth it.... but this is not walk in the park so far.

The next matter I want to tackle is recording ----it seems stuck on recording all the time. I have motion activated recording set and low sensitivty PIR, and it just records and records records...no problem really....but run out of disk space quickly and it starts to over-write too soon.

I never dreamed that there would be this much followup and tweaking when I bought this unit....honestly. FAAAAAR from a "plug it in and go" solution.

Thanks for posting your experience and the information gained from it.
You might ask for 2nd level or higher support if you seem to run in to a similar issue in the future.
