Optimal Dual Channel Settings
« on: May 24, 2015, 05:21:18 PM »

I haven't quite got my head around optimising dual channel routers yet. My 880L has 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies. I think I read it has beam forming (which I admit I don't fully understand... is that some combination of two frequencies?).

My setup is that my phone (G900F) can run on AC, and so can my Macbook Pro. But there are devices in my household that can only run on N. I have been running different SSIDs for 2.4 and 5, with 5 set to AC only, and 2.4 handling all the other devices.

Do I stand to benefit from making the SSIDs the same? And what impact will setting 5GHz to operate with other specs (N, G) have on my nice clean AC connection?

Maybe my knowledge is limited. But if I were to be able to bond the channels, or otherwise configure the router for better performance, I'd like to know what I need to know ;) If that makes sense.

  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Any status on this>?  ???

Sorry I'm still not getting emails when there is a new post. Will look in to that.

I'm in New Zealand, I purchased it here, but I can't find where region is defined in the settings.

So not sure if Smart Connect is available for your region or not. I see the NZ site is down at the moment due to maintenance. Smart Connect is a new feature that was added to the 880L here in the NA region that automatically connects your client wireless HW to the router and makes the best determination on which frequency is needed by the client HW using one SSID name and PW for both radios. It was added to v1.04 FW here however I don't know if or when it will be added to your regional FW since D-Link handles development based on regions. You might want to phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask about this.

Otherwise, use separate SSID names and PWs for each radio on the 880L and you'll be fine.

Sounds good. I see it here listed as a feature... http://www.dlink.com.au/home-solutions/dir-880l-wireless-ac1900-dual-band-gigabit-cloud-router

I assume we are the same region as Australia. Oooooh, I just noticed it's in there. Will have a play. Cheers for pointing it out.

Hi, I thought I'd come back and comment here. Smart Connect has been working well for me. I haven't probed logs or really even followed up which band my devices have been connecting to. I'm assuming it's doing its job, and that's to silently keep me connected.

Until now... I'm trying to get on the WiFi with an older Android device (Atrix 4g), it just won't assign me an IP and I never get on. The Atrix is telling me the signal strength is excellent, but times out and I eventually get an "Avoided due to poor internet connection".

The Atrix is capable of 5gHz and 2.4gHz, wireless N. When Smart Connect is enabled in d-link I don't get any other options.
I have tried the Atrix with another WiFi connection and it gets on the net just fine, ruling out a problem with the device.

Any ideas?

Hmm seems to be working now. I turned guest on and off. It must have rebooted Wifi in the process which did the trick.
