How to connect 506L & Telstra/Bigpond 4G USB?
« on: January 01, 2014, 07:57:51 PM »

Hi all, new member here!   :)

I read all I could on this 506L, but since only the recent firmware made the USB capable of running a USB modem for internet connection, the info on any issues is sparse?

I'm in Australia & hopefully someone here is, too. Basically, I have a USB 4G mobile dongle. If plugged to the PC directly, it installs it's "modem manager" & after that all you do is plug it into the PC, the manager pops up to handle the connection, you click "connect:, you're online. So, I know the modem itself is operating fine.

My issue is figuring out how to get this sort of connection started when the USB modem is plugged to the 506L? It's obviously not going to launch the installed manager- because that only happens with the direct plug-in.

I hope I made my issue clear enough. Please reply with any ideas?

All very appreciated. What I'm hoping to do is to get a wireless signal going for some friends who have two PC's but only this one dongle to share (there's no regular telephone at their place, only mobile phones & this dongle).

Thanks!

Link>Welcome!

You may need to contact D-Link support on the phone to see if this router and your particular USB modem is compatible with this router. If the modem is installing drivers then it may not work with this router. You might need to find a compatible modem if D-Link support USB modems. Please ask them which modem for your region will work with this router.

Hi! I´m new member here  :)

I have the same problem as girldownwonder some time ago,

The difference is that my 4G modem is compatible. While doing settings in router i manually the 3G/4G does not come up.
It worked before I did reset it and of course 3G/4G option was there beside other options.

I remember I had the same problem when I bought it but someone guided me in router. Unfortunately i dont know how to make the option visible.
Hoplefully you can help me.

Thank you!

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Hi I'm a new member as well and have recently purchased the D-Link 506L.

I have previously attempted to connect a Telstra ZTE MF823 to the 506L but without any success.

I noticed that the ZTE MF823 isn't listed on the compatibility list but the ZTE 821 is.

I purchased the Telstra ZTE MF 821 the other week and initially couldn't get the connection to authenticate when using the Set up Wizard.

I updated the Firmware Version to the latest V2.15 from V2.14.  http://support.dlink.com.au/Download/download.aspx?product=DIR-506L

I then attempted to set up the 3G/4G connection manually instead of using the Wizard.

Within the "3G/4G Connection Type" set-up change the "Dial-Up Profile" from "Auto-Detection" to "Manual". Once you do this you will be given additional options.

Looking at the options I noticed that the "Telecom: " option was NOT set to "Telstra". After changing this setting and confirming the other settings for Telstra I saved and the device rebooted. Once the device re-started it took about 2min for the 4G to authenticate and then the status was updated to "Connected".

======================================

Dial-Up Profiile: Manual
Country: Australia
Telecome: Telstra
3G/4G Network: WCDMA/HSPA
Username: Blank
Password: Blank
Verify Password: Blank
Dialed Number: *99#
Authentication: Auto
APN: telstra.internet
Pin Code: Blank
Reconnect Mode: Auto
Maximum Idle Time: 600
Primary DNS Server: Blank
Secondary DNS Server: Blank
Keep Alive: Disable

======================================

I hope this helps.

I've also attempted to get the MF 823 to work with the new settings but event though the connection is shown as "Connected" within the Status there is no internet connection. Assuming this is because the device is still not compatible with V2.15

Good Luck..

Link>Welcome!
I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.
