I think its about time my DSL 2740 went into the BIN!!!
« on: July 26, 2012, 11:45:32 AM »

I don't know why I have SO much problems with this dam router????????????  One thing it keeps dropping out and I have had BT look at it.  They have fixed a problem and it still does the same thing by dropping out.  When I EVENTUALLY fix it and EVENTUALLY get logged on my WEP security (yes WEP as I cannot for some reason get it to accept WAP) disappears!  I then have to try some how to reconfigure the WEP and get it going.  It doesn't always work the first time.  Many times I have to reboot the Windows to get it going.  The other thing is if I reboot WEP also disappears and then we get into the viscous circle.  I can't afford to change it as living on benefits I have other things to spend my money on.

Any ideas how to make life easy?

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
What firewall settings are being used currently.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Also make sure the phone lines and signal on the lines are in good condition and filtered correctly if needed. Ask the ISP to verify signal line levels.

Answer to 1st quest -Firmware Version :   UK_1.16
2nd quest location UK
3rd quest I am wired to the main comp, but the printer and the laptop are wireless.
As for the rest I have NO idea.  I am afraid my skills on routers are zilch and I struggle to undertsand them.  Funny I can strip and rebuild computers, but when it come to routers I run a mile.  But I will go through your list and see what the configuration is.  Is there a way I can load a text file here to show you?

Can post pics of the configuration if you like.

However I would contact your regional DLink support office, maybe level 2 and see if they can help you with this.
