D-Link Wireless Routers for Home and Small Business => DIR-882 => Topic started by: rentalagreement on May 03, 2018, 08:32:29 PM

Hi everyone,
I have searched and read but I just can't figure out why my DIR-882 is repeatedly losing its WAN connection. I have discussed with my ISP and can confirm that the modem is not the issue nor is the connection to the internet. If I hardwire to the modem, I have no issues, it's only via the router that I have issues. PS. The router and modem disconnected twice while writing this up.
Here are some specs:
- Router: DIR-882 HW V: A1
- Firmware:
1.10 2018-03-10T17:54:22 I have managed to downgraded the firmware via recovery to 1.01 which doesn't make me feel too good about it but it's what dlink support had told me to do yesterday as there no longer seems to be the 1.10 firmware on the support site for my version. Maybe that will fix the problem but I feel somewhat more vulnerable now - Factory reset: Yes, I have performed a factory reset since updating the firmware twice.
I tried a 30/30/30 but the upgrade failed every time I tried that this evening. I have managed to downgrade the Firmware back to 1.01. - Was the router working prior to upgrade: Mostly yes, We would still need to reset once a day but now it's literally 20-30 minutes.
ISP details
- Cable Internet w/ Teksavvy 25MBps. Modem: Thomson DCM476
- Dynamic IP
- I have swapped out the cable between modem/router, yes
- What wireless modes am I using: 2.4 and 5 ghz.
- 2.4ghz
- Security: WPA2-Personal
- Mixed b/g/n
- Wifi Channel: Auto (Yes there are a few neighbouring Wifis but not many, I'm not in a building
- Power: High
- Channel width: 20/40/
- HT 20/40 coexist: True
- 5 Ghz
- Security: WPA2-Personal
- Mixed a/n/ac
- Channel: Auto
- Channel width: 20/40/80
Other settings
- Dynamic IP DHCP
- ipv6 Local connectivity only
- QoS Engine: I set to 25 Down/5 up as per my plan
- Firewall: SPI IPv4 enabled, Anti-spoof checking enabled, Ipv6 simple security, enabled, Ipv6 ingress filtering enabled
I have tried:
- Factory reset of the router
- Setting static IPs for each of my devices
- Setting QoS to my appropriate speed
- Setting a static IP for the modem (I figured, if it could at least connect for a day that would be okay, but nope!)
- Disconnecting all computers from the network except ONE ( and yes, I tried 2 separate computers
Any ideas you may have would be greatly appreciated. Is this router just a dud?

Link>Welcome! (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48135.0)
- What region are you located?
Is the router still disconnecting from internet after downgrade?
Try setting 2.4Ghz to single mode N and manual channel 1, 6 or 11.
Try setting 5Ghz to mixed N/AC and manual channel 48 or 149.
Disable QoS or don't set any devices in the sections.
Do you have access to the routers web page when this disconnect happens?
Try setting manual WAN port speed, Try 100Mb then try 1000Mb.
-
I had a similar issue. It (in my case) was the cable modem. I had techs out for 5 months almost every 2-3 weeks - good connection, modem tested good, they added a signal booster, replaced the modem with the same model, no coax splitter, replaced cables, plugged modem into an outlet by itself, etc etc etc. I finally bought a Arris SB6183 and it has been up 24/7 for the last 4-5 months.
Does your modem reboot when it drops? In my case I would see my modem start its reboot process when my connection dropped.
Is your modem and/or router running hot?
It is difficult finding the chipset for this modem. My google must be broke or my 5 hour energy hasn't kicked in yet. Looks to be Broadcom but it is mentioned in the Intel Puma 6 conversation.
Maybe try resetting the modem --> https://help.teksavvy.com/hc/en-us/articles/200601094-How-To-Resetting-your-Thompson-Technicolor-DCM475-476 (https://help.teksavvy.com/hc/en-us/articles/200601094-How-To-Resetting-your-Thompson-Technicolor-DCM475-476)
Is this the first device connected to your modem (ie did another router work ok?)
How long was it working before the firmware update?
It is almost impossible to know if it is the router or modem without replacing one of them.
-
Thanks both. I will try this and report back.
A few things I can already report:
- After downgrade to 1.01 Firmware, the connection still dropped after 20 minutes. This one was disheartening. I was really really hopeful
- When it disconnects can I still connect to the router webpage? Yes
- Does my modem reboot when it drops? No, there is no change to the modem and if I plug my computer directly to the modem the connection is fine.
- I have reset the modem 30/30/30 yes
- Previously, I did have some disconnects but they happened once a day or so. I had an old D Link DIR-665 and that would drop connection sometimes in 24/48 hours. That said, they have reviewed the signal, etc etc and the modem is working. Again, if I am hard wired to the modem I have no issues at all
- I have no devices in QoS and set the settings appropriately to my speed
I'll try the rest of what you said and report back
-
So no activity on the modem (link lights) when it drops?
How long does it recover and start connecting again? Is it a consistent time frame?
In the Internet settings on the router, clone the MAC of the computer you directly connect to the modem (may not do anything but you never know - it is part of the router/modem negotiation. If the modem doesn't clear the MAC address, connectivity may vary).
I wouldn't worry too much about the LAN/Wireless settings on the router. If all devices drop internet connectivity at once it is the router/modem connectivity.
Make sure the modem has the latest firmware (looks like 2.1 from teksavvy).
It sounds like either the router is bad (you could connect one computer to the Internet port and one on LAN and ping test overnight or for a few hours), or some quirky negotiation issues between the router and the modem. In many similar cases changing the modem to a different model worked.
-
Yes, I think the problem is the connection from router to modem for sure. And that said, I have been connected for 9 hours now. I get a feeling the change from 1000 Mbs to 100 Mbs for the WAN setting is what did it, but I had also changed some of the other settings based on what you guys said. So I am going to change settings back and try and see if the WAN speed is indeed the case. I had a few drops still but afterwards it was able to reconnect and stayed overnight which is great.
I'm probably going to take a bit of time with it as this issue has consumed my time for the past few weeks so I'm going to enjoy this for a little bit before I try and narrow it down.
want to thank you both for your time and energy in helping me find a solution. I really really appreciate it.
Will report back once I change more settings and see if I can conclude it was the WAN speed. but that's my current hypothesis!
-
Thanks for the update and hopefully the connection will stay stable. Let us know how it goes.
-
Would there be a problem in the WAN port speed feature when set to AUTO?
Thanks for the update and hopefully the connection will stay stable. Let us know how it goes.
-
It was on Auto previously and when I changed it to 100 then things seem to be fine.
-
Auto should work as well...

I have the same router and teksavvy modem and am currently plagued by this issue. I've tried the changes mentioned above and I still get disconnects every 30 mins. Sometimes I get longer periods with no disconnects. I can sort of correlate it with an iphone 7 being connected, but it still disconnects when the phone isnt around.

Hey!
My hardware version is A1
Firmware version is 1.10 (also had issues on previous firmware)
Region: Ontario Canada
ISP is TekSavvy Cable
Modem: Thomson DCM476
-
A quick update: The reduction in WAN from auto to 100Mbps worked for a short time and then I was back to the same issue. I received an email from the DLink tech support advising that there was a new Firmware in Beta and to test it.
I did a factory reset, installed the new firmware (going through 1.04 and then the 1.10B) and then did another factory reset. So far it has been rock solid (knock on wood) and I have had no drops in connectivity. At this point, I'm almost getting weirded out that it works so well...
-
I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. I would ask about any availability of a beta that you can get a hold of. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

Glad the beta helped fix this. Hope D-Link will post it soon.
Enjoy. ;)

I've contacted support and upgraded to the beta firmware. I will try this over the next few days and let you know how it goes.

I haven't seen a drop in the connection since I upgraded to the BETA firmware.
It looks like the Beta firmware has fixed the problem 8)

Thanks for the update.
-
Sorry for the delay.
The beta I was sent from support was 1.10B02_Beta.
There was a beta folder in the firmware update FTP and that's where they sent me.
The router has been ROCK solid since then, I might have reset it a handful of times since then a few times just because I was used to it!
Thank you to everyone here for the support and troubleshooting! You all rock!
-
Glad it is working.

Hi, I just purchased this router and over the past few days I've noticed various deviced randomly dropping connection. The only way to reconnect it is to forget the wifi connection on the device and reconnect and authenticate. Extremely frustrating.
I updated using the latest firmware manually (due to the Check for new firmware showing no new firmeware available), within that firmware update there were two to upload separately. I'm hoping my issues will be resolved with this, otherwise back to the store it goes.
-
What clients/devices are disconnecting?
What is your environment like? Where is the router placed?
How many wireless devices are connected to it?
Do you have any range extenders connected?
Do Ethernet devices drop too?
Do all the clients drop at the same time or are they all random?
Try disabling SmartConnect in the router (Settings > Wireless)

Hello,
Just to add to this, I have a DIR-882 and have been having the same issue since I bought it six months ago. Initially wired and wireless connectivity would drop. Then it seemed to only be wireless. Lately I have been getting disconnected from online games with an error message that suggests there is an issue on my network even though when I go to speedtest I get 100 down and 16 up (I think I should be getting more up but don't know if it's related).
I upgraded to FW110 two nights ago and last night my entire connection dropped.
I had to hard reset my modem as for some reason the settings had been reset and I didn't have any options for PPOE (bizarre!). After a reset, the options reappeared and I was able to reconnect to the internet.
I will attempt to reconnect the router tonight and see how it goes. I will do another reset of the router beforehand to see if that helps. If that doesn't fix my problems then I will be taking the modem back as I've had nothing but problems with it since I bought it.
Is there anything else I should try?

Hello,
Just to add to this, I have a DIR-882 and have been having the same issue since I bought it six months ago.

You have a router built in to your modem:
https://www.spark.co.nz/shop/internet/modems/spark-hg659b/ (https://www.spark.co.nz/shop/internet/modems/spark-hg659b/)
- If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/fixing_double_nat.htm) and How NAT Works (http://computer.howstuffworks.com/nat.htm). Call the ISP and ask to see if the ISP modem can be bridged. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ (http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Networking-101-The-DMZ-137550). Also check the routers DHCP IP address maybe conflicting with the ISP modems IP address of 192.168.0.1. Check to see if this is the same on the ISP modem, and if modem can't be bridged, change the DIR router to 192.168.1.1 or .0.254.
Example of a D-Link router configured for PPPoE with ISP Modem bridged: PPPoE Configuration on a Router (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=56344.msg219023#msg219023)
Or use the DIR router in this configuration:
