I don't know what is wrong, but I will try fix the problem and report back here xD Come on guys don't laugh at me :9 Anyways while I try to address the problem, I will just show you my best results, that way we can see that our speeds are always changing :o

Did a ping test at Pingtest.net I would like for you guys to also post what you guys got.

How did you fix it?
-
Still haven't began working on it, I believe I got that score because theres a lot of people probably connecting at this time. Also the 20 down speed is not recently that was from 7/3/10. But usually I get very good speeds weird I got that low xD. I will begin working on it later if I see any further issues.

This is during peak times. Sometimes spikes up to 100Mbps. Its not a accurate test though. Realistically I see about 50-55Mbps, which is still pretty good.

Lookinto...man, we need nicknames here BAAAAD. LOL. BTW, just call me Tricky.
Anyway, it looks like your latency went from 28 to 19, so it very well may have been the server, or the pathway to the server. Have you tried the ping test? Maybe a traceRT to see where the latency is? Also, Visualware Speedtest is awsome. Gives you soooo much more data on your connection.
-
Tricky got some serious speeds. You wouldn't mind me moving into your house? But for real are you in a university? Or something like that? Or near your cable provider? Nah you glitch that? Nah for real? Nah what? That is some crazy speed :( Life will never be the same from this day on. Anyways you can call me Chris :) I just seem to like the name lookintomyeyees seems catchy. But wow!!! I won't sleep tonight, 73Mb! its taunting me.

I think
Trikein Tricky is just bragging. :P
People call me Furry. How about you, Ol One Eye? :D
-
I think Trikein Tricky is just bragging. :P
I would have to agree with (wait is it furrynutz?, furry?, nutz?, Come on give us a nickname).
-
Ok..maybe bragging a little bit. But no, no real trick. I do live on the street that the backbone for URI goes on, so its probably a bit more robust then most. Other then that; DOCSIS 3.0 with Ultimate, a seperate dedicated IP for my PC, and perfec signal levels. Plus I tweaked my registry and TCP. My record is 101Mb down and 9.5 Mbps up, but I can't access it since I have that new IP.
If it makes you feel better I am moving into a place where my rent is double, so I have to downgrade my services to 15Mbs down. ::frown:: Im going to miss it.
-
Poor baby :P
-
Tricky nvm I am not moving in with you -_- 15Mb, What are you crazy? Nah man I need that 73Mb! Either you stay or I don't move in. your choice :P
-
Heh. Well I fell in love with a apartment I just had to have..but really couldn't afford. But like they say, you have to wear the suit for the job you want, not the job you have. This place is going to be that for me. It means some cut backs though. No Droid X..::frown:: No new LED...::frown::..and no more Ultimate for 50 when I can get 15Mb down for free. And yea..I know I am very lucky, but I work my butt off to get it too. I pay my dues though. 100 hour weeks in a crappy pizza place for 7$ a hr under the table..yea..I praise my job every day after that place. LOL

I have comcast 12/2 w/ SB6120 (DOSCIS 3.0 its great I'm tellin you!) and I always seem to get 20mbps down, but sometime the up isn't up to par. Never seems to be a drag on things like gaming though.

With a ping of 0 you should not worry if you are going to lag or have issues in game, pretty neat. Btw anyone here uses lockerz? or have heard of it? Its pretty cool.

I don't think its possible to have a latency of 0. Even from me to my ISP CMTS (Next hop after modem) is like 5-6ms. I think thats some bad data. I mean even if you could SEE the server out the window, I can't see getting below 8ms.

Yea, Dlink is good, but one of its major weaknesses is not being compatible with any 3rd party firmware. I have a WRTY54S with Tomato on it that I use at my brothers place. Looks no where near as cool as my DGL though. Heh

Ok, SB 6102 connected and online. Woo Hoo. No major speed improvements however I only need 10Mb for now. Real test will be XBL and general use. At least when they come up with fast speed packages, I'll be ready. Looking good so far.

Any of the light blue on the modem? Also go here
http://192.168.100.1/cmSignal.htm
You should see atleast 3 channels bonded on the downstream. If not, no, your not going to see any performance increase at all. Also, what firmware are you running?
-
Yea blue light indicate bonding channel which = increase in performance. I heard the sb6120 really works well here in new York. Ok tricky I was thinking my signal on my modem sometimes seems bad so I was thinking of disconnecting everyone outside and putting my own splitter which connects me and than connect everyone else on the other part of the splitter? What you think? So basically I will remove myself from all that messy splitters and just put one splitter with me and than all the other messy splitters.
--
Chris
-
Its hard to say without knowing how your coax is set up. I assume you live in a apartment complex or something? What are you signal levels? And you don't have your separate drop? But generally, yea, the more direct route from source to modem the better. But you kinda don't want to screw your neighbors either. Have you had a technician look at it yet?
-
Yea a terch came in never does nothing though :( Plus my signal is excellent sometimes. So yea It sometimes goes bad and good. I really don't know why. I live in a house/apparment.
--
Chris
-
got the blue online light only all others are green. Only see one downstream and one upstream bonding. Ya, figured probably wont see any more improvements since I'm maxed at 10Mb already. Gaming seems pretty good. Will see if Cableone offers faster speed packages later on.
-
The way throttling works and features like powerboost work having a SB6120 seperate your bandwidth over three channels can really help. The thing is, the online light was blue? I don't think it can be
Light guide (http://www.motorola.com/staticfiles/Business/_Documents/User_guides/Static_files/SURFboard%20DOCSIS%203.0%20eXtreme%20Cable%20Modems%20Pocket%20Guide.pdf?localeId=33)
I think you mean your link light is blue, which means your connecting to your 4500 at 1000/Full Duplex. I max at 10(15 with Powerboost) but I can hit some transfer rates of 30-40Mbps. And my old place was even better. PM that Mod and see when DOCSIS 3.0 will come to your area.
-
Ya thats the Link Light, sorry. All others are green though. Still experiencing lag but thats in the game.

Just finished setting up my router and look what I have managed so far.
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/951862552.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
I had to manually put my upload speed to 6mb/s on the router interface and I am getting better speeds xD.
-
Just be careful not to go above what you can get directly to the modem. Maybe even go a little below that. Remeber, this isn't telling your internet how fast it can go, this is telling your router how to manage data so it can go onto the WAN and not get a "speeding ticket" aka heavy throttling and have QoS suffer causing latency. In gaming, latency is more important then speed, so play around with that number and test out online gaming.
-
Ok My ISP gave me 5 Mbps of upload and currently I have set my router to 6000 kbps Which is currently getting me close to the 5Mbps but when I set it to 5000 kbps I don't reach close to 5Mbps. So tricky what do you recommend because it is true I will get throttle down if they see me over doing it.
--
Chris
-
Perhaps I said that wrong. I don't mean the active throttling your ISP may or may not do when you reach a certian cap. I am talking about the passive throttling done to the data over your ISP's network based on your modems config file. Its kind of hard to explain without getting uber technical. Basically you want to find out what your Upload QoS cap is, and set your upload speed to that. Even if your get a lower transfer, I bet your actual online gaming experiance will be better. Remeber, your not uploading large files when you game. Your sending lots of small packages of data very quickly to many different sources. All I can suggest is to play around with it and see what gets you the best result in real life gaming. Is that good or do you really want me to go into the why? ::grin::
-
That's fine ::)

I used to have a test result that said it was a down speed of 150MB/s which was rather confusing, since i wasn't able to navigate to anywhere on the internet, thus confirming, SpeedTest.net is not an accurate speed test site.

You said you used to do a speed test with another server and it came back with 150Mb/s, that just proves the point that speedtest.net is more accurate. 150Mbs seems to fast and now you are getting 22 so think about.
EDIT: My speeds just keep improving over the days. I really love this new modem.(http://www.speedtest.net/result/988308789.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
-
If anything, the way Speedtest.net is designed you get a higher result then you get. And I think he did mean Speedtest.net. I have gotten similar results. Speedtest, ironically enough, is not technically a "speed" test, but a capacity test. Meaning you would never be able to transfer 21Mb from site A to B. Rather, its the maxium capacity that the connection allows. Like I had told alot of people, network performance is probably one of the more complicating fields you can get into in IT. Next to maybe Data encryption. Here is a good page though on my site of choice though
http://www.myconnectionserver.com/whitepapers/measure_the_quality.html
-
Yea, that is true. Speedtest may say my I am getting a download speed of 38Mb/s but that is not true to other servers. I won't actually get that when I am downloading a file or simply browsing the net. Speeds will always vary through different servers. Networking is complicated, although I want to learn more and more about it. To me it is very interesting.

Chris
-
Oh, don't get me wrong, improvement is still improvement. If you saw your speed go from X to X+10, then thats still a very good thing. I love my 6120 ^^

--
Chris
-
Who you kidding, you have at least 20MB down. Heh. But to be honest, speedboost doesn't really help with games all that much at all. It would be like having a dump truck to bring your groceries home from the store. The extra space doesn't do much because the size of the data is so small. Thats why latency and QoS is so important. And you have a good ping, so your probably going great. You have speedy ninja like packets.
-
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/1347318952.png)

I don't get results in a box like above, but when i go to http://speedtest.net/

36.08 Mbps download
4.17 Mbps upload

Can only post your own ISP connections. Fail Harry. :P Someone should remove that post. ;)
That was my ISP connection. When I said "another Cox user" I was refering to JoeScan, and I was posting because he had beating my "high score". Hehe. I had come back and defend my crown. :-)
Seriously though, these tests are just for fun. It doesn't say much towards your actual transfer rate. I did score a 0ms jitter on my connection, which means my network is just about dead center. Woot!
-
And how actually gets to use that entire connection speed anyways. LOL. I still think they should yank you post...your just bragging. ;D
-
Aren't we all braggers :) Well a 100Mb/s connection can be used to its full potential easily in my house hold. lets me do the math....... Calculation completed... So you have 12.5MB of download speed, lets see 3 people streaming netflix about 3MB and huhh Ps3 and xbox downloading about both 2MB.. Okay I quit only way to use it to full potential is to abuse it... Done bye I am out........
--
Chris (I don't fail)
-
No, you just need the DOCSIS v3 SB6120 and 50Mb Down LOL. :D
-
I remember when you had that 10Mbs connection oh boy are ISP improving their speeds. I just can't wait till I am upgraded to 100Mbs for free :) Okay brb got work.
--
Chris
-
Ya 100Mb for free..Good luck with that wishful thinkin. LOL.
-
Give it about 2 years and I think 50 will be the norm. Will probably go 20>50>100 like it goes 5>10>20 these days. Removing of analog channels and DOCSIS 3.0 is going to clear up alot of bandwidth. That combined with 1Ghz at the headend will really help things speed wise. And since HFC has to complete with FTTH the prices are probably going to increase on 20% or so.
-
Makes wonder, how fast in the future are we going to be able to go? ???
-
Up to 1Gbs, I used to have 30 down and 5 up as many of you may know and then my ISP upgraded me to 50 down and 8 up for free and they currently offer a plan of 101Mbps and 15 Up so I am thinking just maybe they will upgrade me to 101 and replace that plan with something quicker. Hopefully.......

Speed will not increase even if you do it with a 300Mbps connection, what matters is the ISP speed of which you are being provided have a great day.

Here is mine, still need to add rules per the sticky, I have seen my DL speed as low as 5 meg at peak times and high as 30meg off peak times. Ping for the most part stays at 39ms.

I have to say this router kicks butt!! My old Juniper would only gave me 23 Mb/sec max wireless.

Wired Speed (Tad slower tonight):

This is my new Motorola DOCSIS 3 modem.
-
the 6100 series modems are all D3 modems.
-
It took forever for me to get the new modem. Cox's website even said that my package needed the new modem, but the reps constantly told me I didn't need it (I even gave them the URL to where it said it). They replaced my line inside my home as well as outside. I kept complaining and I finally got a hold of a department that knew what they were talking about. A tech came out and installed the new modem. After that, I'm blazing fast!! My UL bites. >:(
That speed test was on my laptop via wireless (Added wired speed test). I get about ~90+ Mb/Sec on wired.

Nice

Sweet!

Which Motorola did you get fraggboy?
-
I will get you that info later on today (after work). I honestly don't remember. ;)

I have a Motorola 6120.
-
How did you even get the Ultimate package without the D3 modem? Their professional install only.
-
So, what's the latest, greatest modem by Moto? No longer the 6120?
-
Here is a break down.
SB6120:
4 channels down, 4 channels up(4x4). Still the gold standard.
SB6121:
4x4, new case, MoCA filter.
SB6180:
8x4, new case, MoCa filter. Very hard to find.
SB6580:
8x4, new case, MoCA filter. Modem/Router Combo
SB6141:
8x4, new case, MoCA filter. Short answer, its uses a different tuner then the SB6180. Similar performance.

This is with the 4500 in line? WOW. Always wondered if these routers could be used on ISPs like this.

**Chants: I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy, . . . " :o
Is this via wireless?
Verizon Fios is one fast ISP. And, from what I understand, very reasonable.. ;)

How did you even get the Ultimate package without the D3 modem? Their professional install only.
We started with the package below it and I called to upgrade. They never came out to switch my modem.. **Shrugs**

Whats peoples results lately?
-
Hmm.. Cox did something on their end recently. I'm getting a faster D/L rate, and the U/L is about the same. (Wireless connection) The only difference I know is that I have a different IP address. Normally the last 2 octets change, but this time all 4 octets have changed.
;D

That will happend. Nice DL and UP. You should be good to go.

I went back to Charter and am on the 30/4 plan (not 40/4, I usually get a little more speed from them).

I went to speedtest.net and noticed I was only getting less than 30Mbs when directly to the modem. Cableone had be test with there site and I was getting 50Mb down. I guess some of the speed test sites get over loaded and such from what the tech said. I guess it's working. ::)
-
I get a higher ping rate with Charter's test site.

They have a Speed Test Plus Beta version. :) There's a java applet that it uses. Once I get home, I'll check it out.

I have, usually the Speed Test Plus Beta version. Anyway, pings are at least twice as much as speed test and my DL speed is 5meg less than when compared to speedtest.net and my connection server website. I don't think it is all that accurate for me.
Most accurate speedtest website IMHO is my connection server for DL and sharper probe app for upload. The speed tests at DSL reports also seems to be pretty accurate too.

Now that DSLreports is back online now. ::)

Added a short list of common speed testing sites to the Library. You can find the link to it on the first post in this thread. Enjoy.

Right on. You Premium?

Nope. ;D

Well I heard my ISP was bonding to 3 upstream channels in my area so I decided to reset my modem and sure enough it booted up with 3 upstream channels. I was already bonding to 8 down.
Anyway, ran a speedtest:

If I never had speed or quality issues with my upload, will bonding to 3 channels instead of 1 channel really do anything?

Just creates a biger pipe for traffic flow.
