DIR-632 disappears regularly, requires reboot
« on: April 21, 2011, 11:00:18 PM »

I've just been using my DIR-632 for a couple of days but I've had to reboot it several times already.  I have a couple of laptops and mobile phones connected as wireless clients, then after a few hours, suddenly the router is no longer available.  Its SSID doesn't show up and all connections are dropped.  I have to power cycle it to bring it back to life.

It is in the same location and environment as another older router it replaced which didn't have problems like this.  There are no wireless phones or other obvious interfering factors.

How can I fix this?

What is your ISP service? DSL or Cable?
What is your ISP Modem? Stand alone mode or built in router?
What wireless modes are you using? Mixed? Try single mode G or Mixed G and N?
Try turning off auto channel scan? Try different Channels, start with 11 and work your way down.
Any other WiFi in the area?
Does this happen with only one device connected and all others turned OFF?
Any cordless house phones in the area?

Great checklist!  Here's our situation:

ISP service: Cable
ISP modem: stand alone, but there is a router in between the modem and the DIR-632.  I set it up following the procedure to "Connect to Another Router" in the manual.
Modes: It was mixed b, g and n.  I have now set it to mixed g and n.
Auto channel scan: Was on, I have now turned it off and set to channel 11.
Any other wifi: We're in a residential subdivision, so there are several other wifi setups in neighboring houses, but nothing closer than that.
Connected devices: We generally have at least two or three devices connected at once.
Cordless phones: There are a couple of Panasonic 5.8GHz phones in the house.

I'll let you know if it's more stable after the changes.  Thanks!

Ok, I recommend going from Modem to DIR router.
Whats this other router?

The other router is an old Linksys WRTG54 with its wireless turned off.  It gets worse: there's a switch in there too, so the chain is:
cable modem => router => switch => DIR-632

That's a little messy but it puts the DIR-632 in a location that's good and gives me the network connections I need for wired devices near the modem.  I plan to replace the router+switch pair with a more modern 8-port router to simplify things.

After the first changes you suggested things have been stable.  But if the problem recurs, I'll try hooking up the DIR-632 directly to the modem and see if that works better.

Thanks again for all your help.

It failed twice again today.  So I changed the network topology to:

cable modem => DIR-632 => switch

I'm using the DIR-632 as a router now and have one less item in the chain than before.  It's in a different room now too, so maybe a different environment will help.

Here's hoping...

It failed again.   ???

I've now switched to Channel 6, but I'm not very optimistic.

This used to happen about once every two weeks with my old Linksys router.  With the D-Link the mean time between failure is about 12 hours.  Maybe my cable modem is doing something to mess up the wireless router??

And ... channel 6 failed too.  I now have a case number with D-Link Technical Support.  They took me through many of the same questions and steps that were suggested here, then we reset the router and re-configured it from scratch.  It failed again after a few hours.

Is there some sort of logging facility that can be turned on to diagnose problems like this?

Can look under Tools/Logs and see if there are any entries for this time frame that your seeing this reboot. And you are using Single mode G to test?
Try changing form auto bandwidth to 20 only.
Try turning off Short GI under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Test with only one wireless devices if you can. Graduate turning on other devices.

Let us know.

  • I don't see a Logs tab under Tools.  But I've now set it up to mail me the logs each day.
  • Was using G+B mode, now I've set to G only.
  • Bandwidth has always been at 20 MHz only.
  • Using just one device would definitely be a challenge. But the last time it failed, all devices were off the network, so I'm going to assume it's not related to the particular devices.

Check Status/Logs

What was the device you had connected when it failed?

I also have this problem.  I talked to tech support and they recommended that I return the router.  I am curious if anyone else has an Android phone that they use on their wireless router?  I read a story about Android phones causing problems with DHCP on a university campus and that university no longer allowing Android phones on the network.

Possible, have seen some interesting issues with cell phones and routers.
Did you try changing the wireless modes?
