DCS-942L recovery mode
« on: August 18, 2014, 04:53:56 AM »

Hi,
my dlink DCS-942L doesn't work after failed firmware update (through mydlink.com).

Now power led is always red, and nothing happens.

I've found some help topics about recovery mode in dlinks routers, and tried to repeat it on my camera.
After holding reset button and powering device, led becomes green, but i still can't see camera in network.

What else can I do to recover firmware?

Thanks!

Yes.
I found this solution in many documemts for DIR-615 recovery.
It opens Emergency Room or Failsafe UI that way.

Just FYI for people, the recovery mode does not seem to work over ethernet on the 942L.  My guess is the flash mode is for a serial connection to the system board.  I too had my camera bricked by a bad firmware update attempt.  I messed around with it for a few hours and also get the flashing red followed by solid green if you power it on while holding the reset button, but have never found any way to upload the firmware from there.  Finally put the camera on a computer with Wireshark installed and never saw a single frame coming from the camera when it was put into this recovery mode.

I gave up and emailed support - a day later I got a reply with the standard "reset to factory specs and retry the firmware update" unhelpful response.  I called support today - painful to say the least.  An hour and twenty minutes of trying the same troubleshooting steps over and over again I got agreement to allow me to submit a request for an RMA.  I just did so - their RMA policies are crazy btw, you need to return everything or they charge you, including the ethernet cable ($10) and driver disks ($12)!  Who keeps that stuff?  Never in my years of IT work have I seen a company ask for the worthless driver disk back!   And you have to pick up the cost to ship it back to them.  Very disappointing support experience but I guess they keep their prices so attractive by cutting customer service & good will costs.

If you provide a credit card number as collateral, they will ship the replacement camera without waiting for you to return the defective unit first.  This approach will allow you to place the defective unit in the the box of the new camera, and you can simply send back the new CD, cable, manuals, etc that came with the replacement unit.

Were you able to either regain access to the camera or obtain a replacement? ???

Not sure if D-Link has a out of warranty repair service. You might phone contact them and ask...
