DCS-931L frequent image errors
« on: August 21, 2013, 02:15:02 PM »

We are seeing these bad images in real time display (e.g., JustConnect+) and stored in remote server (via ftp)
Here is a sampling from a few hours today.

This one is going back to vendor.

Look familiar.

is this  related to a  newer f/w?

the 931L has v1.1 firmware.
the image effect looks very similar, which is kind of odd since the 931 is much more like the 930 & 932 than it is to the 5010 ...
It's going back.

I haven't tried images on my new 5010L, but I could only tell the f/w is related from the new  OSD label you have applied...

I'll see if I can replicate this with my DCS-931L.  :-\

How frequently do the artifacts recur? I ran an FTP test at 1 FPS for ~15 minutes, generating ~900 images and they all looked fine. I'm using FW v1.01 with the default image settings.

Are there any specific settings you adjusted that may impact the image (e.g. brightness, etc)? Do the artifacts present themselves under specific lighting conditions? How often do the artifacts recur (e.g. 1 out of every 1000 images, etc.)?

I returned the camera, as I decided not to be an alpha tester for D-Link.
Generally there were 1 or 2 in any given 30 minute interval, each interval having anywhere from 6 to ~40 images triggered by "motion". So they seem to happen with new activity, not so much with repeating activity - thus your 1 fps test would probably not trigger them.
They were visible in real time, it's not the ftp'ing.
I can't imagine it getting better with time.

I've started recording motion detection events, nothing thus far...

I setup my DCS-931L to record motion detection events as video clips and still have not encountered any video artifacts like those you've posted. That's not to say this issue will not eventually present itself, but it may take some time given the infrequency that you've described.  :-\

I've recorded upwards of 4 hours worth of motion detection clips and haven't encountered any image artifacts.  :-\

the errors that we got were recorded in  jpeg - but they were visible in real time so maybe that was video mode as well - perhaps a hardware issue for the particular camera, which we returned

but also seen on at least one 5010 (?)

anyway, while the wireless extender function  or the audio triggering may be useful to some, the 931 is pretty much the same as the 930 - including sadly soft image, lack of control of ftp image frame rate, and tendency to issue zero-byte image files to the remote ftp server at exactly 00, 20, or 40 minutes after the hour.

I've recorded upwards of 4 hours worth of motion detection clips and haven't encountered any image artifacts.  :-\

I'll have to look into this...  :-\

While the DCS-931L is not perfect, the images and video are much sharper than the DCS-932L (which i believe has the same optics as the DCS-930L) and the camera feels more responsive in general. The camera also supports 30 FPS @640x480, while the DCS-932L tops out at 20 FPS at that resolution.

Perhaps it's my mind playing tricks, but I also feel that motion detection works better than than the legacy DCS-930L/932L series.  :-\

The 932 (and 933) optics must differ, in that it has the night mode and thus has an IR-cut filter bypass ???
Whereas 930 and 931 are "daylight-only".
But, "much sharper"? hardly.

I was referring to the daytime optics. I think the specs are the same.  :-\
