A1 vs A2?
« on: July 21, 2009, 01:19:56 PM »

Hello everyone!  I JUST purchased a new DGL-4500 from my local Fry's last night... flashed to the latest released image (no betas... yet!) and joined this forum.  I noticed that there are a TON of people with "problems" with A1 units.  Just to make sure, I checked my "new" router to determine which version it is... and OF COURSE its an A1 NOT an A2.  Should I take it back and insist on an A2?

I remember someone saying, that the only difference between A1 and A2 is the standard shipping firmware and that there's no hardware-difference at all ... - please correct me if I'm wrong ...

Well I would take it back if it were mine.  You can look on the box for the hardware version before you buy.  If the establishment doesn't have a good turnover on its stock chances are you will not find an a2.

Since you say you see many users having issues with the A1 h/w, i'm sure you also noticed what "problems" those have been...

*hint* It's not the hardware...

Actually I think that a bad batch of a1's made it to market which is why we've been asked for sn's on several occations.  My a2 seems to be working ok, better than the a1 I have with 1.2x fw on it.  It certainly is a shame that d-link didn't think more of us buyers than to release a fw that had not been fully tested.  If they ever release a working post 1.20 fw I will flash my a1 with it.  Don't think that I'll ever flash my a2 with anything beyond the 1.16b3 I'm currently using on it.

But, does anyone have any idea what 'exactly' is the difference between A1 and A2?

Thanks

I still see it as more a software issue than hardware. Router never had issues with staying on till f/w 1.20. Or it could be all just one big coincidence… yeah that must be it.

Well I distinctly remember that with 1.02 and 1.12 my a1 would spontaneously reboot when loading a rtsp page.  My a2 never had a problem with the same page while using 1.12.

I will say this - so far the A1 has been rock solid :)

I have two a1's (home and work) one is flashed with 1.15 and the other with 1.20, and neither has ever rebooted or ran anything other than solid. The only thing I have noticed is that some web pages load slow on the 1.15, however this could be the internet connection. Both are on roadrunner cable internet.

Wonder what all those people are talking about with the dgl-4500 they have slowing down/locking up/rebooting *after* installing 1.20?

Can all of them be going to an rtsp page?

I have never experienced a single issue with this A1 router pre or post 1.20

I am on an A2 currently.  After I had gone through so much trouble with wireless. 1.21 is okay, but still has problems.  Puffnstuff is a bit crazy.  I've never had problems with RTSP pages, and it's more than likely on his own end.  My router has never rebooted either.

The only problems currently that I've seen is still broken UPnP, WAN and WLAN slowdown, and bad streaming.  Possibly broken GameFuel.

I have contacted the D-Link support to get a replacement, hopefully HW: A2.

Its becoming unbearable. I'm on a RDP and my net dies out (for some odd reason that lags teh RDP, no idea why, thats just weird). But its killing my work. The 3 day (required it seems) reboots don't help! Damned lock ups.
