[HELP] DGL-4500 doesn't "establish Connection"
« on: May 17, 2010, 12:34:48 PM »

I just purchased a DGL-4500 and i can't get it to "establish connection"

I set my modem/router to bridge mode following the instructions from my ISP.

I manually configured the DGL-4500 but it never goes online, when i check the status of the router it just says establishing connection...any ideas how to fix this or am i doing something wrong?? PLEASE HELP

I presume that your using DSL since you bridged the modem? You need to check to see if your ISP needs you to enter in connection log in information or PPPoE. If not then you should be able to use DHCP auto selection for the 4500 router. It should connect automatically if it doesn't need any PPPoE or log in information from the ISP. Check the Status/Device Info/WAN section to see if it's getting any IP address from the DSL modem. You should be seeing a 2 char. IP address; ##.##.###.### in the WAN IP box.

I would call the ISP back and they can help you get the 4500 router connected. Make sure your WAN cable from the dsl modem is going to the WAN port on the back of the 4500. Let us know how it goes.

yeah...i am using DSL and I got the user name and password from my ISP to be able to configure the PPPoE, thats basically the only info i have modified from the factory settings of the DGL-4500. The DHCP server is enabled. My ISP refuses to help me set up my router because they only offer support for the modem/router they provide. I checked the cables and everything is set up correctly. My modem/router is a 2wire if thats any help. Any ideas???

What is the make and model of the DSL Modem you have from your ISP?
What firmware is currently loaded? Status/Device Info.
If your ISP had you disabled the DSL router portion of the modem, and bridged the DSL MODEM and make it transparent, then all thats needed is to connect the LAN cable from the DSL modem to the WAN port on the back of the 4500. Then I presume if you entered in the PPPoE information given to you by the ISP in to the 4500s Basic/Internet/Manual settings, there is a drop down menu for Internet Connection Type. You should select PPPoE from there and enter in the information your ISP gave you.

the 2wire is 2701HG-T...am at work right now so i cant see the firmware that is currently loaded, and i did enter all the info for the PPPoE connection but it just doesnt seem to work...im stumped. i am currently replacing the old modem/router and this new D-Link so i dont know what end isn't working, the 2wire or the D-link. How can i know if the problem isnt the 2wire??

How many LAN ports are in the back of the DSL modem? 1 or 4?
Whice one of these is your model?
http://www.2wire.com/index.php?p=106

Ok Found your model. Ya, you should be able to connect the LAN cable from any of the 4 LAN ports on the back of the 2wire too the WAN port on the back of the 4500.

Have you connected a PC directly to the DSL modem yet in this transparent state? You'll have to do the same thing by entering the PPPoE info I think to get internet if you directly connect a PC. This can be a test. The PC should pick up an IP address. Do you have a friend or neighbor that you can take the 4500 too and check a different connection?

It seems like this is a configuration issue between the DSL modem and 4500. Possible that the 4500 isn't being setup correctly with the PPPoE side of things. What happens if you just let the 4500 DHCP to the DSL modem?

Just some ideas for you to check after work.

I really dislike DSL ISP using these newer DSL router/modems. Makes things harder sometimes to use other routers that work better. I like just the stand alone modems.

The 4500 router should work great as I have helped my buddy in OK which he's on DSL and has the same issue, however his ISP was able to help him enter in the info on the 4500. So I know DSL with PPPoE works well on the 4500.

While your at work you can new an emulator for the 4500 here for informational purposes. I use this alot to help people:

Good luck, let us know how it goes. It should work great. Just seems like a configuration issue here. Have a great day.

i finally got it working yesterday...the modem was the issue but it finally worked after playing with it for an hour...i really hadn't put it into bridge mode but i finally figured it out. i also had a question see if you can help. the firmware is 1.21 on the 4500, i played xbox live for about 2 hours and my brother played ps3, we had both our laptops on at the time and we had no problems with dropping connection. should i just leave it as is or flash it to 1.22?

I would keep was is loaded for now. Work with it and keep going with what you have connected. Work this unit. Yes, v1.21 has issues however I have heard of some people having good luck with this version. Yes some that don't. Keep whats loaded, if you start to notice hangs and random re-boots for internet, Update then. Glad you found the connection issue.
I think you'll enjoy the 4500. I do.

I would do this, save off the current configuration to file in Tools/System I think. Once this is saved, then go and configure the 4500 using the information in the Gaming and Gamefuel sticky and then you can see weather they work for you better or not. If not, then you can load up the saved configuration file and go back to those settings.
