RAID1 - Want to upgrade to larger disks
« on: February 01, 2017, 02:10:18 PM »

Hi there.

We currently have a DNS 325 in RAID1 mode with two 1TB disks.
We just purchased two 2TB disks and wish to upgrade our storage.

Would this way be the correct way to do it?

1. Power down the DNS 325.
2. Remove one of the disks.
3. Insert one of the larger disks.
4. Power it up and do a resync.
5. Once complete, power down and replace the other disk, then do another sync.

Do you have a full tested backup of your data?

Doing what you describe would produce a 1 TB RAID1 array Volume_1 with a 1 TB standard volume Volume_2.

Since these units use a software RAID it is better to allow the unit to format the disks as the chosen RAID array and then restore the data from the backup.

It is also possible to copy the data over from one of the old RAID array disks using a USB/SATA caddy or adapter, provided you either have a Linux computer or the necessary Ext3/4 Installable File System (IFS) driver for your operating system.

Thanks for the reply!

Yes we have a backup. We ended up deciding to just format the new disks and copy everything back.
