Recover Preshared Key
« on: January 01, 2011, 08:28:21 PM »

Right. For some reason I cannot get my XP Pro SP3 PC to connect to the internet through my DIR-628. The PC can see the local network just fine using the USB 802.11n wireless adapter. I have two keys written down. One I created which apparently is the password to get into the router administration. The other I have marked as being the WPA key. When I configure the network thru XP, which key do I enter? The router is set for WPA2 -Personal. Is there any way to recover or show what the preshared key per the router is? All the screen shows is the "dots". (At least Linux lets you display the passwords instead of the dots.)
Thank you.

You have to enter in the WPA key that you created for the WiFi connection. There is no way to recover any keys. If you have lost the key and don't remember it. You need to do a full reset of the router using the button in back so it wipes the user created keys. This will use the default key for Administrating the router and opens the WiFi connection with out a key. Once you reset the router, go back in and use WPA2 with mixed TPIK and AES and put in a password you can remember. This will be the password you use to connect to the WiFi connection on the router for those devices using the WiFi connection. Wired devices don't need the password.

The key with my D-Link DIR-655 to locate the current network WPA Key is to follow the menu items necessary to add a wireless device to the already set up wireless network. There may be more than one way of following a navigation tree to activate the necessary menu display, but the key is to find the wizard for adding a wireless device and then click on "MANUAL" to display the current WPA and other relevant wireless network settings. Here's the navigation map I used recently:

Display Current Wireless Settings [Find WPA Key]

1. LOG IN to D-Link DIR-655 via default IP address 192.168.0.1
2. click “ADVANCED” [top panel]
3. click “WI-FI PROTECTED SETUP” [left panel]
4. click “ADD WIRELESS DEVICE with WPS”
5. click “MANUAL” to display the current wireless settings.
