DAP-1360 Causing lag spike every 60 seconds
« on: September 02, 2014, 03:48:32 PM »

Hello everyone,

I'm getting lag spikes in games like counterstrike:global offensive or world of warcraft for example, this happens exactly every 60 seconds.

My modem is CISCO DPC3925 (wireless modem) and i have a DAP-1360 configured as a repeater so we get wireless connection everywhere in the house (big house). When I turn off DAP-1360 the lag spikes are gone so the problem should be on DAP-1360, I looked everywhere under D-link setup page but couldn't find what is causing the lag spike.

Help will be appreciated.
Thank you very much

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your DAP? Look at sticker under DAP.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the DAPs web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Does the DAP do the same thing if you shut off the ISP modems WiFi and use the DAP in wired AP mode?

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy

  • What wireless modes are you using on the ISP modem?
  • 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N or AC on 5Ghz?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Hello FurryNutz
Thank you for your early answer.

DAP-1360 Hardware version is F1 and Firmware version is 6.00, I'm located in México.

Forgot to mention the computer I use for gaming (where i get the lag spikes) is connected directly to the ISP Modem via ethernet. I tried shutting off ISP modems WiFi and used DAP in wired-AP mode and I still got lag spikes every 60 seconds.

* Currently using wireless mode B/G/N Mixed (Only have 3 options here: G Only, B/G Mixed and B/G/N Mixed, tried all of them and i got same results)
* Channel Width is 20 MHz
* Using Channel 6
* Security mode is WPA-Personal with TKIP+AES encryption
* Devices connected: 1 i-Mac, and 1-4 iPhones depending who is at home.
* There are not any cordless house phone or WiFi APs near by

Thank you

When the PC is connect to the ISP modem, you see lag as well?

What Mfr and model does this PC have for a wireless adapter? I presume your connecting the PC to the DAP aswell?

Ensure the wireless/LAN adapter drivers are up to date on this PC.

Can you try the following...
G only, Auto Channel 20/40Mhz, TPIK only in AP mode...

Hello

The only way i can connect the PC to the ISP modem is via ethernet since PC doesn't have wireless adapter
My PC network adapter is Intel® 82578DC Gigabit, tried updating drivers but they are already up to date.

The ISP modem is in the same room as my gaming PC, DAP-1360 is on the living room (repeater).
I also tried the configuration you suggested but I'm still getting the lag spike :(

At this point I dont think it is possiblle to use DAP as a repeater or AP and NOT get the lag spike.

Hi Furry

Quote
Firmware updates and DLink routers
3. Update the router using the routers web page Tools/System using the .bin file(s) that was downloaded for your product model. The .bin files have to be unpacked from the .zip file.

I could not update the firmware because I can't extract the bin file from DAP1360F1_FW605B01.img which I downloaded at http://tsd.dlink.com.tw/

Tried extracting with WinRAR, ImDisk Virtual Disk, Daemon Tools but none of them worked to open the IMG file.

Thank you for helping me.

Let me have a looksee...

What happens if you send the .img file as is? I don't think there is a .bin file for the Rev F model... .img is the actual file to use I think...

I tried to upgrade the firmware directly with the .img file but when i upload file i get the following message on a blank screen with red text: "Unable to complete upgrading"

Then it sends me back to the http://dlinkap/cgi-bin/webproc website

Dang. Only thing I might suggest is to change the .img to .bin and see...It should either work or not work.

After this, we'll need to contact D-Link support...  :-\

Without updating the firmware, have you tried running the DAP-1360 as a AP (installing it temporarily), in a good spot and running a standard CAT5 TP-cable.

Just to see if that works fine, if so, they you know that using the DAP-1360 as a repeater does not work well for you. Then if possible you could figure out some permanent installation of the DAP-1360 running as a AP instead of a repeater.

Upgrading firmware is a good thing, but make sure you have the correct firmware, otherwise you could brick the unit. Or run into other problems.
