Again did not work!  How long should it take the update to install? When I started the process per instructions I noticed that the red light never flashed but  came on solid immediately.  I released the scan button and noticed the led on the USB stick blinked several times but the red light stayed solid.....

I'm sorry you are having trouble with this process and thanks for letting me know where you are getting stuck. I seems you are releasing the scan bottom too soon... so try this...

Ensure your DNR is OFF, once you have connected the USB stick containing the new firmware with the .bin file renamed to update.bin on the HDD1 port of the DNR-202L, then follow the steps below:

1. Press and hold the SCAN button and then connect the power back to the unit. (don't let go of the SCAN button)
2. Keep holding the SCAN button until the LED ring is blinking red (this may take some time, as the unit starts up it's normal boot up sequence), you'll heard two beeps (one long and one short), keep holding the scan button until the LED ring is blinking red. Let go of the scan button (upgrade process has started)
3. Wait until you hear two short beeps (at least 3 minutes...) which means the upgrade process has ended. (LED light will be solid blue again)
4. REBOOT the unit by unplugging and reconnecting the power.

after the reboot, you will be able to find it on your network when using the latest installation wizard.

Give it a run and let us know.

Bingo! Finally worked but here is what actually happened.  I was holding the scan button but there was one beep and it started blinking blue.  I released the scan button and then it started blinking red.  About 3 minutes later there was one long beep and then a solid blue light.  I rebooted the unit in order for the install wizard to see it.  After that it seems to work fine except the java crashes one time when I access the web page.

**  THIS Reply above is how I finally got the firmware upgraded!  The instructions D-Link provides is *NOT* correct for all DNR-202L models.  I followed Tesauro's method above and mine upgrade finally worked as well.  Following the D-Link provided instructions failed every time **

Thanks for the feed back. I'll be sure to have D-Link review this and I'm sure they will make corrections where needed.

hi,
is there any indication that dlink is going to drop Java for something a bit more... modern???

Java for web is full of security holes and for a reason most modern browsers simply block it and make it difficult to use.
not to mention that its not supported on any mobile/tablet OS.

Ive only been able to use the management UI in IE11 and needless to say, thats not my goto browser...

not to mention how old and clunky the UI is so much so that I can barely understand how to use it. buts thats a different story.
