DIR-655 not reading external drive on shareport
« on: June 25, 2010, 08:11:27 PM »

Just purchased a DIR 655 router and am trying to get it to recognize my external hard drive using the shareport USB connection on the back. It reads a USB thumbstick with pictures on it fine but when it comes to the external drive nothing happens. the drive is a LaCie 500GB portable USB drive. When the drive is plugged in it clicks twice over and over. But when it's plugged into the computer it doesn't click at all. The firmware on the router is 1.32NA and Share Port Utility is installed to the latest version. Also in the USB settings in the web control panel it's set to SharePort so there shouldn't be an issue there. Is there anything else to try and get the router to recognize the drive?

Thanks.

Does that external hard drive get all its power from the USB connection? If it does the router likely isn't suppling enough current to power it.

You need a powered device. USB rarely delivers enough power to run a 7200 rpm drive! The DIR does not.

I had the same situation but I also own a dual power usb cord that came with a portable CD rom I purchased. I had the same clicking noise so I knew the hard drive was not getting enough power. I connected one of the USB ends to the router, the other usb end to the charger end, and the Hard Drive connection. Immediately the hard drive stopped clicking and it was immediately recognized.

I am using a verbatim 1TB Hardrive.
Router Hardware: Dir-655
Router Firmware: 1.34NA
Shareport Version: 3.00

Follow the below link to see what a dual usb cord looks like. This one is missing the power outlet where the second usb can be connected for extra power. Of course if you have another usb input, you won't need the usb power connector.

I have the same issue with SHAREPORT UTILITY installed on PC, and i could see the ext HD ( has its own power supply, not through USB)  behind the router  (saying available) but when i click on 'connect",  it thinks for a while and go back to available.

Router: DIR655
FIRMWARE: A3 , 1.35NA
SHAREPORT Uility: 3.0

under setup tab> USB settings>my USb type is: SHAREPORT (not WCN config..).
then rebooted the router, still its not connecting...

im the ADMIN on the router,
