Dlink Covr 1202 Speed issue
« on: July 29, 2020, 07:20:45 AM »

I have purchased a Dlink Covr 1202 router a couple of days ago, but I am facing a lot of issues with the speeds I am getting on the wifi network.

As we all know Covr 1202 is a dual-band router, but we use one SSID to connect to it. The router in turn decides which device connects to which band and I have no control over it.

In my experience over the last few days of using this product, I have been relatively happy with the performance when using the 5Ghz band, but the performance when connected to the 2.4Ghz band is absolutely abysmal.

I use a 100 Mbps connection, and the speeds I get when connected to the 2.4Ghz network drops to kbps levels. Am testing the network speed on my Macbook. The readings have been taken using  "www.fast.com" website and the device location was the same for both readings.

2.4 Ghz band speed: 4.8 Mbps
5 Ghz band spped: 110 Mbps

This inconsistency in speeds makes the Dlink device pretty much unusable as the connection is not at all reliable. A quick google search reveals that the 2.4Ghz band issue is faced by a lot of other users as well.

Is there any fix for this? Please help.

Your Huawei HG8145V5 already has a built in router and wifi.
It's recommended to bridge this or disable ALL wifi radios on this modem.

20 feet is too close between A and B point. 30 feet or more is recommended.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this.

We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.

I have already disabled the Wlan on my Hwawei router, and using only the Dlink Covr Wifi signal on all my devices.

I contacted my regional Dlink support as well, but they were unable to provide any satisfactory solution.

The distance I mentioned was approximate. I did measure the exact distance this time and it was 26 ft. I moved it further away but I do not see any difference in speeds.

I see a mention of chaging 2.4Ghz wireless channel on the FAQ page. Will that help? And how do I do that?

Could however MESH is automatic channel selection. Something that can't be changed with in the A Points web page.

Has a factory reset been performed and setup from scratch after v1.08 was applied?

That I have not attempted. The updates happened after the Installtion was completle. Will try doing that and post the results.

What's the best way to do a clean reset and install?

Can do a reset to defaults in the A points web page or press the reset button for 10 seconds then release.

Thanks FurryNutz.

The suggested steps seems to have improved the connection speeds. I also moves a point closer to my workspace and that seemed to have helped with the speed stability. I am now thinking about adding 2 more units to expand my network coverage.

Can I buy another Covr 1202 and use it as additional units to expand my existing Covr 1202 setup. I have this doubt as the pack comes with one Master unit and one expansion unit. So can I use both the units in the new Covr 1202 box as expansion units.

Glad the suggestions helps and placement also helped.

Not sure how many B points can be added to 1 A Point. Not sure if D-Link has mentioned this. I would presume it maybe possible. I would ask D-Link. Let us know if you find out anything.
