Error message when trying to change DNS server on DIR-655
« on: August 06, 2014, 10:56:34 AM »

Hi all,

I'm trying to change my DNS server from the default 0.0.0.0 to google's (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4).
However, when I press "Save settings" I get the error message: "The internet Connection Type is not for 3G Internet connection. Please select WWAN to support 3G internet connection".

In fact, I don't even need to change the DNS address to get this error. When I leave the settings as they are and press save, I get the same error message.

Please see screenshot below.
I looked across the internet for a possible solution, but couldn't find someone else who reported this. Anyone knows how to resolve this?

Thanks,
Sceppi

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values

PC 3rd Party Security Software Configurations
  • Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.

PC Web Browser Configurations
What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8, 9, 10 or 11, set compatibility mode and test again.
Disable any security browser Add-ons like No Script and Ad-Block or configure them to allow All Pages when connected to the router.
Clear all browser caches.
Be sure to log into the Admin account on the router.
Try turning off these features in Chrome:
Top right corner, little bars for options > Settings > Settings (on left) > Show advanced settings.
Uncheck these:
Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors
Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar
Predict network actions to improve page load performance
Enable phishing and malware protection

Hi,

Sorry for the lack of info. Below some additional info on my setup:
- I'm from Belgium (Europe).
- I used the latest firmware that's available for my region: 2.09 (for DIR-655 rev. B1)
- I'm wireless connected to the router

- I have a Cable connection, using a Dynamic WAN.
- I tried using multiple browsers, but all give the same error message

Except for this issue, my router has been functioning well. I able to change all other settings such as port forwarding, DMZ, ...

What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?

Spot on, restoring factory default settings and setting-up from scratch did the trick.
Before I had saved  my config file and then loaded it again after the firmware update... but then I got this error.

Many thanks for the excellent and fast response!

Awesome. Previous config file may have been corrupt. Do a new save config to file once you have it all set up again using IE or FF.

Enjoy.  ;)
