"Volume_1" Is Rebuilding
« on: June 07, 2016, 01:03:21 PM »

Is it normal for the DNS-340L to rebuild regularly and if not, what might be causing this?

I've noticed a lot of light activity from my DNS-340L over the past week or so and after curiosity got the better of me this evening, I decided to check the logs. It seems that a few times over the week, a couple of minutes after rebooting of an evening (Power On/Off scheduled for every evening 19:30 - 23:00) it starts '"Volume_1" Is Rebuilding' followed by '"Volume_1" Has Been Rebuilt' some hours later, sometimes the following day (after being interrupted by Power Off). In the Hard Drive Configuration page it says 'Volume_1 Is Syncing Now'. Pretty sure I had it set to RAID 5.

Any thoughts or help appreciated.

What you are seeing is usually down to a disk or disks problem.

This can be a physical disk that is failing.  Run the SMART test to see if there are any problems.

Data is not being fully written because of the automatic shutdown.  If the NAS shuts down before computers on the network there is the possibility that some data cache might not have been flushed to the NAS therefore leaving the stored data in an ambiguous state requiring a RAID rebuild at next startup.

A way to test the second possibility is to turn off the automatic power on/off and leave the unit on 24/7 for one week and then check the logs again.  If the rebuild does not occur during that time you can then experiment with the shutdown time to make sure that all data is on the NAS before it shuts down.
