USB HD Update - 3TB WD
« on: May 29, 2012, 02:50:28 PM »

Hey, I spoke with a senior level technician today.  Here is what I learned.

-I have had better CSR experiences with AT&T
-They would only say that USB drives smaller than 500GB would work.
-They do not have a list of approved devices
-They aren't "at liberty to say" whether or not a FW update for larger drives is on the way
-They would refund my money, rather than tell me that the product would eventually work.
-The issue is with Shareport Plus. (duh)

I have a great record of success with tech support with many brands.  I am patient and knowledgeable.

Bummer.  I need a solution.  Anybody know of any other routers that support large HDD's?

Wes

Why not share out your HDD using a PC instead? This is what I do at home. I have 3 drives on a server PC at home. Might be a good immediate solution for you.

That's true, but then I have to constantly have my old tower pc on, and it's not available from outside the network.  My wife and I would use it remotely.  I may do it in the meantime, until a router can actually walk the walk.  Thanks for the suggestion!

You can use a FTP programs to gain access to the 3Tb drive from external sites too. Just need to set up port forwarding and then share out the drive and use the FTP server and client. Keep us posted.

I've got a Seagate USB3.0 unit with >500GB (May be 2TB, can't remember). I'll try it out and post back (may take a few days before I have time)

I justed connected my WD My Book 2Tb external USB drive and SP saw the drive:

I believe it's a 2x 1Tb internal drives using WD's RAID software.
Maybe SP supports certain Mfr and model up to 2Tb?  ???

Here is the image, hope everyone can see it. This is a Seagate 3TB HDD (USB 2.0), clearly connected to the DIR-857 USB 3.0
