samsung galaxy s4 wifi issues
« on: May 15, 2013, 06:08:34 AM »

Hi all,
My current set up:
Hardware Version: A4
FW: 1.21
mixed 802.11n, 802.11g, 802.11b
Auto Channel Scan: Enabled
Transmission Rate: Best ( Automatic )
Channel Width: Auto 20/40 Mhz
Security Mode: WPA-Personal
WPA Mode: WPA2 only
Cipher Type: AES

Symptoms:
from reading various threads all over it seems that D-link and Samsung phones don't play well with each other . like everyone else with this issue I can connect. however signal will terminate after about 1 minute or so and I would have to manually go into my phone settings and shut down Wi-Fi, open it again to establish connection again. but like before it will only hold for a min or so before it freezes yet again.
I did find a way around this issue, it seems that if I change the Cipher Type from AES to TKIP the wifi issue goes away and I am able to hold the connection.
so my question is, how secure is tkip encryption? I know that the AES is the strongest encryption to have but it wont play nice with my phone  :(
so is it safe using TKIP? any vulnerabilities I should be aware of? like with online banking and other sensitive information, etc.
Thanks, Jim.

Hi FurryNutz and thanks for the quick reply.
thanks for the Wiki link, I did read up on the technical terms. however, what I was really looking for is some real input on how safe is it in this day and age to use the TKIP encryption. basically what I'm looking for is some input from real life users of this encryption to see if it useable and secured at the same time.
as I said in my OP, I'm currently using the AES but my phone wont hold the connection. TKIP is the only way for me to establish connection. that said, if it's not safe to do so then I will have to figure out another way to resolve the issue.
5 years+ and this router been preforming like a champ! never had any connectivity issues with any other devices until now.

Over all TPIK is a safe mode to use. Unless you feel that someone IS attempting to hack in to your wireless, at most cases, they probably are not. Hackers are usually attempting to gain access to bigger networks and big company information. As long as you maintain good network review of your system, making sure that there are only authorized users that are allowed on your system, you'll be fine. The data going back and forth from the device to the router will be secure and safe.

If your concerned about more security, you could set up a D-Link DAP model access point on the 655 in addition to the wireless on the 655 and have one SSID name set up for TPIK and set up the other SSID name for AES only. Would give you flexibility for your Samsung devices for TPIK and AES for all others that work well with AES. A suggestion.

Wow! that was really helpful information  :)
what I ended up doing is creating a guest zone SSID. other then changing the Cipher to TKIP on my guest account I left all other setting the same as my main SSID.  also For ultimate security I made sure that Enable Routing Between Zones box is unchecked. my phone is been connected with zero dropouts for the last 3 hours  :)
the only draw back that I can see is that TKIP is using the G band and is not compatible with the N band, however when using any powerful device there is little difference when opening applications or surfing the web. infact, from what I can see from playing with my phone for the last two hours is that pages on the web actually open up faster then on the N mode. I think it has to do with the less encryption\decryption that pages has to go thru with the AES Cypher.
anyways, I'm Golden now. Hope this is helpful to others with same issues with Samsung phones as well.
Thanks for your suggestion FurryNutz  :)
All the best, Jim.

Good Solution. I'll remember that as an alternative for this kind of issue. Thanks for sharing. Hope it works well for you. Enjoy.  ;)

We were also having this issue with my cousin, though he has a DIR-615 router. I was tempted to update the FW of the router to the latest version as a last resort but after doing the game of changing the Cipher type to TKIP, the S4 connected to the network

I agree with TS, AES offers the strongest wireless encryption on any wireless router and basically TKIP is a notch below that but still a safe encryption to use.

Been notified of this:
http://www.zdnet.com/samsung-acknowledges-galaxy-s4-wi-fi-connection-problem-7000015431/

If anyone is seeing this problem, please let us know. D-Link is working on it. Not sure what Samsung is doing, if anything.  ::)

I wish I knew about this problem before I bought the S4 yesterday, though I do have 15 days to return it (with a 35 dollar restocking fee). Had I known I would have bought my 2nd choice, the HTC Razr Maxx HD.

My setup: DIR-655. I updated the firmware a few min ago to 1.36NA and so far it seems to be holding. Previously it would drop connection within minutes. The router was working perfectly for years with 1.22 I think it was. I never bothered upgrading because with firmware I usually follow the old saying: if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I'm going to give Samsung a few more days if this 1.36NA update doesn't work and just eat the fee and swap to the Razr. I really like the S4, but I like wifi internet more.

<<<<<<<UPDATE>>>>>>

Well that didn't take long, pretty much right after I posted the WiFi dropped. Ill put up with this nonsense for a few days, then I'm going to their competitors. Hopefully D-link fixes it for them, since it seems Samsung doesn't care too much right now.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK  only or Auto.

Thanks, I have been trying various settings on and off all morning. I think it works then its gone. I can't even remember what settings I had when it all started, but I didn't use TKIP only, which I have now set.

So far its working, but I've been fooled before.

Let us know if switching to TPIK and 20Mhz only on Mixed G and N does anything.

I ended up making a guest zone account using the TKIP setup and its working now. Thanks.

I don't know enough about any of this to know if using TKIP over AES will be a security problem or not. But it hasn't dropped the WiFi since I started using it.

Thanks to all who contributed this post.  I just purchased a Samsung Galaxy S4 the day before Thanksgiving, and could NOT get it to work properly on my D-Link DIR-655.  Same issue where it would connect, work for at most a minute, and then hang forever.  Disconnecting to the router and reconnecting would give me another minute until it would hang again.  It worked on other WiFi's though... i.e. stores, restaurants.

Googled until I found this post.  My wireless settings were "AES and TKIP", and I changed it to TKIP and it worked like a charm immediately when I reconnected to my router.

Wonder if D-Link will have an firmware upgrade to cover this?
